The Musician's Parable
Lanier's structural argument that what happened to the music industry under digital distribution is the template for what is now happening to knowledge work under AI — the same operation performed on a larger canvas at compressed speed, with the same predictable distributional consequences.
The music industry was the first creative economy to be fully rendered into the cloud. Lanier watched it happen from the inside as a practicing musician whose own work was caught in the machinery of dissolution.

The story is paradoxical on its face: more music is available to more people today than at any previous point in human history, streaming platforms are valued at tens of billions, and yet musicians — with vanishingly few exceptions — cannot sustain livelihoods from recorded music. The arithmetic is brutal. Streaming royalties of three to five thousandths of a dollar per play require three hundred thousand plays to generate a thousand dollars of revenue.
