The difference between human biographical surprise and machine associative surprise may be one of degree rather than kind. Sawyer’s counter is that the degree matters at the ceiling: the work that changes a field, that rewrites the rules rather than playing by them, consistently emerges from the collision of genuinely different biographical perspectives—and the machine, however impressively associative, has no biography and therefore no perspective that is irreplaceable by any other trained system.
