Polanyi illustrated intimation with examples from the history of science. Johannes Kepler intimated the elliptical orbit of Mars years before he could specify it mathematically—driven by a sense that the circular models could not be right, that some hidden simplicity lay beneath the apparent complexity of planetary motion. Michael Faraday intimated the field concept before he could articulate it—seeing lines of force where contemporary physics saw only action-at-a-distance. In each case, the intimation preceded the discovery by years of work, sustained the researcher through failure and confusion, and guided the search toward the articulation that retrospective accounts present as the obvious starting point.
The AI-collaboration pattern Segal describes—bringing half-formed ideas to Claude, receiving structured responses, evaluating whether the structure captures the original intuition—is intimation operating in dialogue with articulation. The human supplies the intimation ("there's a connection between friction and depth that I can't quite name"). The machine supplies rapid articulation ("laparoscopic surgery removed tactile friction and relocated difficulty to interpretation"). The collaboration is productive when the human possesses tacit ground sufficient to evaluate whether the articulation is faithful to the intimation—whether it captures what was being reached for or merely produces a plausible-sounding substitute. The collaboration fails when the articulation's smoothness substitutes for evaluative judgment, when the builder accepts the machine's output because it sounds like insight rather than because it embodies the intimation's truth.
The protection of intimation in the AI age requires protecting the conditions under which it develops. Intimation is not a mystical gift but a capacity built through sustained immersion in a domain. The physicist who intimates where a theory breaks has spent years working with the theory, encountering its successes and its anomalies, developing tacit sensitivity to the boundary between what it explains well and what it strains to accommodate. When AI tools make domain immersion optional—when comprehensive literature reviews arrive in minutes, when competent analysis is generated on demand—the occasions for building the tacit sensitivity that produces genuine intimations diminish. The researcher can produce work that looks like discovery without having developed the embodied relationship to the domain from which real intimations emerge.
Polanyi introduced intimation in Personal Knowledge (1958) and refined it in "The Logic of Tacit Inference" (1966). The concept built on his reading of Henri Poincaré's accounts of mathematical discovery and on his own experience as a scientist pursuing problems whose solutions he could sense before he could specify. The term was chosen to preserve the pre-cognitive, felt quality of the experience—intimation suggests something sensed rather than thought, felt rather than computed, guiding inquiry from below the threshold of articulate awareness.
Pre-articulate direction. Intimation is the sense of a hidden pattern before the pattern can be specified—a felt pull toward discovery that guides inquiry before hypotheses can be formulated.
Built through immersion. The capacity to intimate develops through years of embodied engagement with a domain—building tacit sensitivity to where frameworks succeed and where they fail.
Guides hypothesis formation. The explicit hypothesis a researcher tests is not selected randomly but guided by tacit intimation—the vast space of possible hypotheses is navigated by judgments that resist formalization.
AI computes, does not intimate. Pattern-matching produces probable outputs from existing data but cannot sense hidden coherence not yet specified in the patterns—cannot exercise the tacit judgment that makes discovery possible.
Requires commitment under uncertainty. Following an intimation means pursuing a direction that cannot yet be justified, staking resources on a hunch that may prove empty—the risk-taking that constitutes intellectual courage.
