Costly Building

Costly building is the simulation's synthesis — the alternative to cheap competence and the concrete expression of everything Bonhoeffer's framework demands when translated into the AI builder's situation. It is not slower building. Bonhoeffer was not a pacifist who counseled inaction; he participated in a conspiracy that required speed, coordination, deception, and the willingness to kill. The costliness was not pace but moral weight — the refusal to act without reckoning, the insistence on bearing consequences rather than displacing them, the discipline of maintaining honest self-evaluation under conditions that rewarded self-deception. Costly building in the AI age is not building with less ambition or intensity. It is building with the full weight of moral awareness that ambition carries consequences — for the displaced, for the strained families, for the students, for the communities downstream — and that those consequences belong to the builder.
