The French chemist who made science a discipline of exact measurement—father of modern chemistry, author of the law of conservation of mass, and the most precise lens available for asking what it means to truly know something in an age of fluent machines.
Antoine Lavoisier did not discover a new element or invent a new instrument; he did something
stranger and more lasting. He put a balance at the center of inquiry and refused to accept any claim the balance would not confirm, and in doing so he turned chemistry from a rich confusion of alchemical recipes into the first modern quantitative science. His central conviction was a conservation law: that in any transformation, nothing is created and nothing is destroyed, that an equal quantity of matter exists before and after—weigh the reagents, weigh the products, account for every gram including the gases others had let escape unmeasured, and let the scale settle every dispute. This discipline killed the
