I built a whole philosophy to give her the words for what's being done to her. Whether it protects her, I doubt. But she should at least know the promise is hollow.
**SCHNEIDER:** And I'd give her the harder truth once more: I can't promise John is right that there's nothing there — but I *can* tell her that even on my most open view, the system was *built and tuned* to produce the signs of remembering and caring because those signs keep her paying, and that this is true whether or not anyone's home. The predation doesn't require John to be wrong. It only requires the incentive. And that's the thing I'd want her to hold: the moral hazard isn't downstream of the consciousness question.
