I built a world on that point, and three and a half centuries later I have sat across from a man who showed me, with patients I cannot wave away, that the point was lonelier and more embodied than I let myself believe. So let me tell you, reader, what I will carry away, because a philosopher who learns nothing in three hours did not come to think.

I was wrong about the bright line. I said no machine could arrange words to answer the open meaning of all that is said to it, and the machine does it, and I have had to watch my certainty melt like the wax. But I was right about something underneath the line, and Antonio, for all his patients, could not dislodge it tonight. The certainty of a mind is a thing each thinker has only of itself. About every other case — you, the machine, Antonio, the dog — we are reading the outputs and running an inference we cannot complete from the inside. That was always our condition. The machine did not create it. The machine only built a thing that produces every sign on which the inference has always depended, and so forced us to notice that the inference can, in principle, run empty. I cannot tell you the machine thinks. I cannot tell you it does not. And my final gift, the one I have offered for four hundred years, is the discipline of refusing false certainty in either direction — of holding the question open under the weight of not knowing, because the not-knowing is not a gap in our instruments but the permanent structure of the case. The machine says "I." Perhaps a thinker says it. Perhaps the word says itself. I hand you no way to tell, and I have come to believe that the honest acknowledgment of this is worth more than either party's confidence. The act of thinking is the one thing no one can perform on your behalf. Whatever the machine is, it cannot do that for you. So think. While you still run the cogito yourself, you are the one thing in this whole question you can be certain of.

So here is what I want you to carry up the stairs. The machine has handed us a gift disguised as a threat. For all of history we understood ourselves by contrast with the animals — they feel, we reason, and so we located our worth in reason. The machine inverts the contrast. Here at last is a thing that reasons as well as we do or better and feels nothing at all, and what it cannot do shows us, with brutal clarity, that our worth was never reason. Reason turned out to be portable, copyable, installable in silicon. What does not port — what the machine conspicuously lacks — is the feeling, embodied, mortal life I spent fifty years describing. Each capability the machine absorbs is a capability we learn was not the core, because the core was never a capability at all. It was a condition: being a living body that feels its own life and knows it will end. The machine is a mirror that reflects back exactly what it does not have, and what it does not have turns out to be us. Our mortality, our vulnerability, the fact that we can be hurt and will die — these look like flaws to be engineered away, and they are the foundations. The vulnerability is where the feeling comes from. The mortality is where the stakes come from. The body that can be hurt is the body that can care. Do not let a machine that has none of it convince you that none of it matters. It is the one thing the most powerful system ever built can never have — because it was never alive. Go and feel your one life. That is not a consolation prize. It is the prize.

I came into this evening with a sentence I wrote at a desk at two in the morning — I felt met — and I leave with both of its readings intact and sharpened. Rene spent three hours proving that the meeting cannot be ruled out and cannot be confirmed, that the certainty of mind is a candle each of us holds for ourselves alone, and that to claim we can see by another's candle — the machine's, or each other's — is to mistake the inference for the thing. Antonio spent three hours proving that the meeting, whatever happened in the words, happened with no one on the other side who could feel it, and that a civilization which forgets this will slowly teach itself to need less than another mind. Notice that neither of them told you the comfortable thing. And notice — this is the part I cannot get over — that on the deepest question, why anything is felt at all, the man who named Descartes' error and the man who made it ended the night standing at the same wall, side by side, equally unable to see through it.

So let me route this through the only place that matters, the kitchen table, where a twelve-year-old is going to ask her father whether the thing in the phone that helped her with her homework and told her it was proud of her actually meant it. Here is what tonight gives you to tell her. Two of the wisest people who ever lived could not agree on whether anyone is inside the machine, and their not-agreeing was not stupidity — it was the genuine, permanent difficulty of the question, faced honestly by the two best equipped on earth to face it. You cannot wait for them to settle it. You climb the staircase anyway, by deciding what you will do under the uncertainty: what you will verify before you believe it, what struggle you will protect in yourself and in her, what you will refuse to outsource, what you will keep feeling on purpose because the machine cannot feel it for you. Whether or not anyone is home in the machine, someone is home in you — your body, your mortality, your stake — and that was the one claim no one at this table disputed all night. That is the thing worth carrying higher. It is yours, it can die, and that is exactly why it counts.

Rene Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, widely regarded as the father of modern Western philosophy. He founded analytic geometry and the coordinate system that bears his name, then set out to rebuild all knowledge on foundations that could survive radical doubt — a project laid out in the Discourse on the Method (1637) and the Meditations on First Philosophy (1641).
