The ratio that changed my mind was not about productivity. It was about failure.

I had been telling the story of the twenty-fold multiplier for months. The story of Trivandrum, the story of Station, the story of what happens when you hand a capable person a tool that collapses the distance between imagination and artifact. I believed the story. I still believe it. But I was telling it wrong.

I was telling it as a story about output. More code. More features. More products shipped. The numbers were real. The exhilaration was real. What I was missing was the question underneath the numbers: Does more output actually mean more excellence? Or does it just mean more?

Dean Keith Simonton spent forty years answering that question. Not about AI — he began his research decades before anyone outside a handful of labs was thinking about large language models. He answered it about Beethoven. About Edison. About Shakespeare, Picasso, Darwin, and thousands of other creators whose careers he subjected to the kind of quantitative scrutiny that most people reserve for financial statements.

His answer is not the one I expected. It is not the one most people in the AI discourse expect. It does not say that genius is mystical and machines cannot touch it. It does not say that volume automatically converts to quality. It says something more precise and more uncomfortable than either: that quality is a probabilistic function of quantity, but only when each unit of quantity involves genuine creative engagement. The constant holds. The condition is everything.

That condition — genuine engagement, real creative investment per attempt — is exactly the variable that the current moment is testing at global scale. When AI multiplies your output by twenty, are you generating twenty times the genuine attempts? Or twenty times the transactions? Simonton's framework does not answer for you. It tells you the question matters more than you think, and it tells you what happens in each case with the dispassion of someone who has counted the evidence across centuries.

This book walks through his research — the equal-odds baseline, the blind variation model, the career trajectory, the Zeitgeist theory, the combinatorial mechanism, the swan song — and holds each one up against the AI moment like a diagnostic lens. Some of what you see through it will be encouraging. Some of it will unsettle you. All of it will make you more precise about a conversation that desperately needs precision.

I brought Simonton's framework into this series because the AI discourse is drowning in narratives about productivity and starving for frameworks about quality. He built the framework. The least we can do is look through it.

Chapter 1: The Lottery of Genius

Thomas Edison held 1,093 patents. The number is so large it stops feeling like a count and starts feeling like a geological formation — something deposited over decades by a process more systematic than any single act of inspiration. Of those 1,093 patents, perhaps a dozen changed the world. The phonograph. The practical incandescent light bulb. The motion picture camera. The rest — the electric pen, the concrete furniture, the spirit telephone he reportedly tinkered with in his final years — range from the mildly useful to the frankly bizarre. Edison's hit rate, measured as world-changing inventions divided by total patents, was roughly one percent.

The Romantic tradition would find this ratio embarrassing. Genius, in the popular imagination, is a condition of almost supernatural accuracy — the lightning bolt that strikes exactly where it needs to, the vision that arrives fully formed, the masterpiece that flows from the creator's mind like water from a spring. The genius does not fumble. The genius does not produce concrete furniture. The genius sees clearly while the rest of us grope.

Simonton's most counterintuitive finding — arrived at through the quantitative study of thousands of creators across centuries and domains — is that creative quality is a probabilistic function of creative quantity. The creator who produces masterpieces does not produce them because each individual work has a higher probability of being excellent. The creator produces masterpieces because the creator produces more of everything, and a roughly constant probability of excellence, applied to a larger sample, yields more excellent works.

Simonton called this the equal-odds baseline. The name is deliberately provocative. It means what it says: each creative attempt has approximately equal odds of being a hit, regardless of where it falls in the creator's career, regardless of whether the creator is at the height of powers or in the earliest apprenticeship, regardless — and this is the part that makes people uncomfortable — of whether the creator is a genius or a journeyman. The difference between Edison and a less eminent inventor is not that Edison's ideas were better on average. It is that Edison had more ideas. The constant probability, applied to 1,093 attempts rather than 50, produced the phonograph. Applied to 50, it might have produced only the electric pen.

Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays. The handful performed today, the works that constitute the cultural bedrock of the English-speaking world, emerged from that large sample. The others — Timon of Athens, The Two Noble Kinsmen, King John — are performed rarely or not at all. Shakespeare's hit rate is higher than Edison's, because the domains differ and the probability constant varies by field. But the structural principle is identical. The masterpieces were not produced by a different process than the lesser works. They were produced by the same process, operating at sufficient scale for the mathematics of probability to deliver its gifts.

Beethoven composed 722 works catalogued in standard reference. The nine symphonies that define Western orchestral music constitute roughly one percent of his total output. Picasso produced an estimated 50,000 works across his lifetime — paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, prints. The dozen or so that appear in every art history textbook constitute roughly 0.02 percent. The ratio is not a sign of waste. It is the mechanism. The masterpieces required the larger sample to emerge from. They could not have been produced in isolation, because the creator could not know in advance which attempt would prove extraordinary. The knowledge arrived only after the fact, through the evaluative process that Simonton's model calls selective retention.

This principle has been tested across domains with a methodological rigor that borders on the obsessive. Simonton and his students counted everything. Publications, patents, compositions, canvases, poems, scientific papers. They plotted quality against quantity across entire careers and across populations of creators. They controlled for age, domain, historical period, cultural context. The finding held. The equal-odds baseline is not a metaphor. It is an empirical regularity with the stubbornness of a physical constant.

Now apply this finding to a technology that multiplies creative output by an order of magnitude.

In the winter of 2025, a transformation swept through the technology sector that The Orange Pill documents with the urgency of a participant-observer. Engineers using AI coding assistants reported productivity multipliers of ten, fifteen, twenty times their unaided output. A team of twenty, equipped with Claude Code, produced work that would have previously required the sustained effort of hundreds. The imagination-to-artifact ratio — the distance between a human idea and its realization — collapsed to the width of a conversation.

If Simonton's equal-odds baseline holds under these new conditions, the implications are staggering. A creator who previously produced fifty works per year and could expect, say, one work of genuine excellence (at a two-percent probability) now produces a thousand works per year. The same two-percent probability, applied to the larger sample, yields twenty works of excellence. Not because the creator has become more talented. Not because each individual work is more likely to be extraordinary. But because the denominator has changed, and the mathematics of probability is indifferent to the mechanism that changed it.

This is the most optimistic reading of the AI moment, and it deserves to be stated clearly before the complications arrive: if volume drives quality, and AI drives volume, then AI drives quality. The creative lottery has issued everyone a thousand more tickets.

But the baseline carries a condition that the optimistic reading tends to glide past, and the condition is where the real argument lives.

Simonton's research showed that the equal-odds baseline requires genuine creative engagement at each attempt. The probability of excellence is constant per attempt — but the word "attempt" is doing significant work. An attempt, in Simonton's framework, is not merely an output. It is an output that involved the full creative process: the generation of novel combinations, the evaluation of those combinations against some standard of quality, the iterative refinement that moves from initial conception to finished work. An attempt is an act of creation, not an act of production.

The distinction matters enormously in the age of AI, because AI makes production trivially easy while leaving creation as hard as it ever was.

Consider two developers, both equipped with Claude Code, both producing at twenty times their previous rate. The first developer uses the tool to explore problems that genuinely interest her, generating multiple architectural approaches to each challenge, evaluating the outputs against her own judgment, iterating until the solution satisfies not just the requirements but her aesthetic sense of what a good system looks like. Each output involves her full creative engagement. She is producing more, and each production is a genuine attempt in Simonton's sense. The equal-odds baseline predicts that her rate of excellent work will scale with her output.

The second developer uses the tool to clear a backlog. She describes tasks to Claude, accepts the first workable output, moves to the next item. Her production has increased twentyfold. Her creative engagement per unit of output has decreased by a corresponding factor. She is producing more things, but each thing involves less of the evaluative, iterative, genuinely creative process that Simonton's framework identifies as the mechanism through which quality emerges from quantity.

For the second developer, the equal-odds baseline does not predict twenty times the excellence. It predicts twenty times the adequate. The volume has increased, but the volume does not consist of genuine creative attempts. It consists of transactions — tasks described, outputs accepted, queues cleared. The lottery tickets are counterfeit. They look real. They occupy space. But they do not carry the probability of a genuine ticket, because the creative process that loads the probability was never engaged.

This is not a subtle distinction. It is the difference between a research laboratory that runs a thousand experiments per year, each designed with genuine intellectual curiosity and rigorous methodology, and a laboratory that runs a thousand experiments per year by automating the procedure and never examining the data. Both produce volume. Only one produces science.

Researchers at UC Berkeley spent eight months embedded in a technology company studying what happened when AI tools entered the workflow. Their findings, published in early 2026, documented precisely this distinction operating in the wild. Workers using AI tools produced more. They also expanded into domains that had previously been someone else's responsibility. But much of the expanded output was what the researchers called "task seepage" — work that filled available gaps without deepening engagement. The AI had not freed workers to do more creative work. It had generated new work to fill every space the efficiency created.

The Berkeley finding is a direct empirical test of whether the equal-odds baseline's conditions are met in AI-assisted work, and the answer is mixed. Some of the expanded output involved genuine creative engagement — designers writing code for the first time, engineers exploring architectural problems they had never previously had the bandwidth to consider. Some of it was queue-clearing at scale. The equal-odds baseline predicts different outcomes for each category, and the aggregate statistics cannot distinguish between them.

This is where Simonton's framework becomes genuinely useful rather than merely interesting. It provides a diagnostic tool. The question is not whether AI increases output — it manifestly does. The question is whether the increased output consists of genuine creative attempts or mere production. And the answer to that question depends not on the tool but on the person using it, on the organizational culture that shapes how the tool is used, and on the institutional structures that either protect creative engagement or allow it to be crowded out by the relentless pressure to produce.

Simonton's data reveals something else that complicates the optimistic reading. The equal-odds baseline operates across a career, but within a career, the distribution of creative quality is not uniform. Creators tend to produce their most eminent works during periods of highest productivity — not because high productivity causes eminence, but because both eminence and productivity are driven by the same underlying factor: creative engagement at full intensity. The periods when a creator is most productive are also the periods when the creator is most deeply immersed in the work, most willing to take risks, most capable of the sustained attention that genuine creation requires.

AI compresses these periods. The sustained attention that previously stretched across months of implementation now concentrates into hours of direction and evaluation. The creative intensity per unit of time increases even as the creative intensity per unit of output may decrease. Whether this compression produces more total creative engagement or merely faster creative exhaustion is an empirical question that the current moment is testing in real time, with millions of involuntary subjects.

The equal-odds baseline is not a promise. It is a conditional prediction. It says: if the conditions are met — if each unit of output involves genuine creative engagement — then more output means more excellence. The "if" is everything. And in the age of AI, the "if" has become the most important word in the psychology of creativity.

Edison produced 1,093 patents because he had a laboratory full of assistants who could execute his ideas at a pace no individual could match. The assistants were, in a meaningful sense, an amplification technology — they multiplied Edison's output by freeing him from the mechanical labor of implementation and allowing him to concentrate on the generative work of ideation and the evaluative work of selection. Claude Code serves the same function, at a vastly larger scale, for a vastly larger population.

But Edison's assistants did not make him curious. They did not give him the restless dissatisfaction with existing solutions that drove him to keep experimenting long after any reasonable person would have stopped. They did not provide the taste — the nearly inarticulate sense of what a good solution feels like — that allowed him to recognize the phonograph when it emerged from the same laboratory that produced the concrete furniture.

The amplification technology multiplied his output. The curiosity, the taste, and the willingness to keep generating even when most of what he generated was useless — those were his. And without them, the 1,093 patents would have been 1,093 pieces of concrete furniture.

The lottery of genius has a new ticket printer. The tickets are cheap and plentiful and available to anyone with a subscription. But the lottery's mechanism has not changed. Quality remains a probabilistic function of quantity — and quantity, in the sense that matters, remains a function of the one thing no printer can produce: the willingness to genuinely try.

Chapter 2: Blind, Guided, and the Space Between

In 1960, the psychologist Donald Campbell published a paper that would reshape how scientists thought about thinking. "Blind Variation and Selective Retention in Creative Thought as in Other Knowledge Processes" appeared in Psychological Review and proposed something that sounded, at first hearing, almost insulting to the creative mind: that the generation of new ideas follows a logic borrowed from evolutionary biology. Variation first — the production of novel combinations without foreknowledge of which will prove valuable. Selection second — the identification and preservation of the combinations that work. The variation must be, in Campbell's precise term, blind. Not random in the sense of dice rolls, but unpredictable to the generator. The creative mind, in this model, does not see the answer and proceed toward it. It generates possibilities in the dark and recognizes the valuable ones only after they appear.

Dean Keith Simonton took Campbell's framework and spent decades building it into a comprehensive theory of creative genius. In Simonton's hands, Blind Variation and Selective RetentionBVSR — became the mechanism underlying the equal-odds baseline, the explanation for multiple discovery, and the theoretical spine of a research program that subjected the most exalted human capacity to the same evolutionary logic that explains the peacock's tail.

The word blind is the fulcrum on which the entire theory turns. Simonton was specific about what it means and what it does not mean. Blindness does not mean the variations are unrelated to the problem. A scientist working on protein folding generates variations related to protein folding, not variations about medieval pottery. The variations are domain-appropriate but outcome-unpredictable. The scientist cannot know, before generating the variation, whether it will lead to a breakthrough, a dead end, or a modest incremental contribution. The moment the generator can predict the outcome, the process is no longer creative — it is merely skilled execution. The generation of truly novel ideas requires a degree of freedom from the expected, a willingness to produce combinations that may prove worthless, because the combinations that prove revolutionary are, by definition, ones that could not have been predicted from the existing stock of knowledge.

This is why Simonton insisted, against persistent criticism, that the variation must be blind to some degree. Fully informed generation — generation that proceeds only toward known-good solutions — is engineering, not creation. The creative process requires a region of darkness, a space where the generator does not know what will work, and this unknowing is not a deficiency but a feature. It is the mechanism through which genuinely novel combinations enter the world.

Now introduce a large language model into this process.

Claude, the AI system described throughout The Orange Pill, generates text, code, connections, and structural suggestions by predicting the most probable next token given the preceding context and the patterns learned from trillions of tokens of human text. This process is emphatically not blind. It is guided — guided by the statistical regularities of the training data, guided by the patterns of human thought that the data contains, guided by a mathematical optimization process that rewards coherence and penalizes the unexpected.

When a builder describes a problem to Claude and Claude responds with a structural suggestion, the suggestion is not a blind variation in Campbell's sense. It is a variation generated by a system that has, in effect, read everything and is producing what the aggregate of everything it has read suggests is the most fitting response. The variation is domain-appropriate and outcome-predictable to the degree that the training data contains prior solutions to similar problems. Claude does not grope in the dark. Claude pattern-matches in the light of an enormous corpus.

This distinction might seem academic. In practice — in the late-night sessions where Segal describes working with Claude, feeling the ideas connect, watching the prose clarify — the distinction between blind and guided variation feels irrelevant. The output is useful. The connections are surprising. The work advances. Who cares whether the variation was blind or guided, as long as it produces results?

Simonton's framework cares. And the reason it cares reveals something fundamental about the nature of creativity that the AI moment is testing.

The BVSR model predicts that the most creative ideas — the paradigm shifts, the revolutionary combinations, the connections that nobody saw coming — emerge from the most blind variations. The logic is straightforward. A variation that is highly predictable from existing knowledge is, by definition, not very novel. It may be useful, even excellent, but it occupies a space that was already implicit in what was known before. A variation that is unpredictable — one that combines elements from distant domains, or juxtaposes ideas that have no obvious relationship, or arrives at a conclusion by a route that no competent practitioner would have taken deliberately — has the highest probability of being genuinely new.

The catch is that unpredictable variations also have the highest probability of being worthless. Most blind leaps miss. Most surprising combinations are surprising because they are wrong. The ratio of waste to discovery is enormous. But the discoveries that emerge from this wasteful process are the ones that change fields, because they could not have been reached by any more efficient route. Efficiency, in the generation phase, is the enemy of revolution.

Simonton's own data supports this with uncomfortable precision. The creative works that achieve the highest eminence ratings — the paradigm-defining contributions, the works that redirect entire fields — tend to come from periods of the creator's career characterized by the highest volume of output and, crucially, the highest volume of failed output. The masterpiece does not arrive alone. It arrives accompanied by a retinue of experiments that did not work, ideas that went nowhere, combinations that fell apart on examination. The retinue is not incidental. It is the mechanism. The masterpiece was found because the creator was searching broadly enough to find it, and broad search means most of what you find is not what you were looking for.

AI narrows the search. That is simultaneously its greatest practical virtue and its most significant creative limitation. Claude does not produce blind variations. It produces guided ones — variations that cohere with the training data, that follow patterns that have worked before, that land in the region of the probable rather than the region of the surprising. The output is more consistently useful than a human's unguided brainstorming. It is also less likely to produce the genuinely revolutionary combination, because revolutionary combinations are, almost by definition, the ones that a pattern-matcher trained on existing human thought would not generate.

The philosopher Liane Gabora mounted a sustained critique of Simonton's BVSR framework, arguing that creativity is not a selectionist process at all — that the analogy to Darwinian evolution is misleading because cultural ideas do not face the same competitive pressures as biological organisms. But even Gabora's critique illuminates the AI question. If creativity requires something other than blind variation and selection — if it requires what Gabora calls "communal exchange," the iterative refinement of ideas through social interaction — then AI's role changes from variation-generator to conversation-partner. The relevant question shifts from "Is AI's variation blind enough?" to "Is AI's feedback rich enough to support the iterative process through which ideas mature?"

The collaboration described in The Orange Pill suggests it can be. Segal describes working with Claude as a conversation — not a one-shot generation but an iterative process in which he describes an idea, Claude responds, he evaluates the response, refines the direction, and the cycle repeats. The creative process is distributed across human and machine in a way that neither Campbell's original framework nor Simonton's elaboration quite anticipated. The variation is not blind. But it is not fully guided either. It occupies a middle space — a space where the human brings the question and the evaluative judgment, and the machine brings a vast associative memory and the capacity to traverse it at inhuman speed.

This middle space may turn out to be more creatively productive than either pure blindness or pure guidance. Pure blindness is wasteful — most variations are useless, and the search process is slow. Pure guidance is conservative — it produces competent output that stays within the boundaries of what the training data contains. The human-AI collaboration that Segal describes operates at neither extreme. The human introduces the unpredictability — the question that nobody has asked before, the direction that does not follow from existing patterns, the insistence on a connection that feels true even though it has no statistical support. The machine provides the associative breadth — the ability to traverse vast conceptual spaces in seconds and return with material that the human could not have found alone.

Whether this hybrid process satisfies Simonton's conditions for genuine creativity is the most consequential empirical question the AI era poses for the psychology of creative genius. The question cannot be answered from theory alone. It requires data — data about the quality distribution of human-AI collaborative output compared to purely human output, data about whether the hybrid process produces genuine paradigm shifts or merely competent recombinations, data about whether the most eminent creative works of the next decades will come from human-AI collaboration or from humans working alone.

That data does not yet exist. The experiment is being run in real time, at global scale, with no control group.

What Simonton's framework provides, even in the absence of conclusive data, is a diagnostic question. Not "Is AI creative?" — a question that generates more heat than light. But: "Does AI-assisted creation satisfy the conditions that my research identifies as necessary for the production of genuinely eminent work?" Those conditions are specific. The variation must contain a degree of unpredictability. The selection must be rigorous. The creator must be genuinely engaged. The process must produce a sufficient volume of attempts, including a sufficient volume of failed attempts, for the probability mathematics to deliver its occasional masterpieces.

The conditions are stringent. AI satisfies some of them spectacularly — the volume condition, in particular, is met and exceeded by orders of magnitude. Others remain uncertain. Whether AI-guided variation contains sufficient unpredictability to produce revolutionary combinations. Whether the ease of AI-assisted production undermines the rigor of selection, tempting creators to accept adequate output instead of insisting on excellent output. Whether the speed of the cycle compresses creative engagement or merely accelerates it.

Simonton built his theory by studying creators who worked with the tools of their time — pens, pianos, laboratories, workshops. The tools constrained the volume of output and, by constraining volume, shaped the creative process in ways that the equal-odds baseline and the BVSR model describe. AI removes the volume constraint. What happens to the creative process when the constraint that shaped it disappears is a question that Simonton's framework poses with precision and cannot yet answer with confidence.

The answer matters, not just for the psychology of creativity, but for the civilization that depends on it. If guided variation proves as creatively productive as blind variation — if pattern-matching across a vast corpus can replicate the generative power of truly unconstrained search — then AI is not just an amplifier of human creativity. It is a participant in it, and the creative output of the next century will exceed anything the previous centuries imagined.

If guided variation proves less creative — if the conservative bias of pattern-matching systematically suppresses the revolutionary combinations that drive paradigm shifts — then AI is an amplifier of competence rather than creativity. The world gets more of the adequate and less of the extraordinary, and the most important creative work continues to depend on the human capacity for the genuinely blind leap.

The space between blind and guided is where the future of creativity lives. Simonton mapped the terrain. The experiment, conducted by millions of builders with AI tools they did not have a year ago, will determine which way the ground slopes.

Chapter 3: The Zeitgeist Accelerator

On June 18, 1858, Charles Darwin received a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace, a naturalist working in the Malay Archipelago, that nearly stopped his heart. Wallace had independently arrived at the theory of natural selection — the idea Darwin had been developing in private for twenty years — and was writing to ask Darwin's opinion before publishing. Darwin was horrified. Two decades of painstaking work, of careful accumulation of evidence, of deliberate delay while he built the case that would withstand every objection — and now a man on the other side of the world had reached the same conclusion from entirely different evidence.

The resolution was gentlemanly, if rushed. Both men's papers were read at the Linnean Society on July 1, 1858. Darwin published On the Origin of Species the following year. Wallace graciously accepted the secondary position. History mostly remembers Darwin. But the episode itself — two men, working independently, in different hemispheres, arriving at the same revolutionary theory within the same narrow window of time — is not the anomaly it appears to be.

It is the norm.

Dean Keith Simonton subjected the phenomenon of multiple discovery to the kind of quantitative analysis that transforms anecdote into evidence. Drawing on catalogs assembled by sociologists William Ogburn, Dorothy Thomas, and Robert Merton, Simonton documented hundreds of cases in which the same scientific discovery or technological invention was made independently by two or more individuals within a short temporal window. Newton and Leibniz independently invented calculus. Bell and Elisha Gray filed telephone patents on the same day. Oxygen was discovered independently by Scheele, Priestley, and Lavoisier within a span of two years. It combines existing ideas, observations, techniques, and materials in configurations that have not previously occurred. The question is whether the combinations it produces are genuinely radical or merely appear so.

This distinction is subtle and consequential. A radical combination, in Simonton's framework, connects elements that are distant in conceptual space — elements that no prior thinker has connected, because the connection requires a leap across a gap that no established path bridges. A large language model does not leap. It traverses. But the mechanism has a ceiling. The connections that a pattern-matcher can surface are, by mathematical necessity, connections that are already present in the statistical structure of the training data. They are connections that someone, somewhere, has at least approached. The genuinely unprecedented connection — the combination so radical that no trace of it exists in any prior human text — is precisely the combination that a language model is least equipped to generate.

Consider Einstein's general theory of relativity. The combination of Riemannian geometry with gravitational physics was so radical that no prior thinker had come close to it. No trace of the connection existed in the scientific literature before Einstein made it. A language model trained on the scientific literature of 1914 could not have generated the connection, because the connection was not latent in the data. This is the ceiling of combinatorial AI: it can find every connection that is latent in human knowledge. It cannot find the connections that are not. And the connections that are not — the genuinely radical combinations, the ones that Simonton's data identifies as the source of the highest eminence — are the ones that matter most.

The ceiling is not fixed. As AI-generated output enters the training data, the space of latent connections expands. Each cycle of generation and training adds new combinations to the corpus, and some of those combinations become the raw material for further combination. The system is, in a limited sense, self-expanding. But the expansion occurs within the boundaries of statistical coherence — each new generation of training data tends toward the center of the space defined by the previous generation, because the optimization process rewards coherence and penalizes outliers.

Simonton would recognize this as a specific instance of a general principle he documented in his research on creative traditions. Traditions, like training data, define a combinatorial space. The most efficient exploration of a finite combinatorial space produces the fastest approach to exhaustion. This is why the human contribution to human-AI collaboration is not merely valuable but structurally necessary. These elements expand the combinatorial space in ways that recirculated training data cannot, because they originate outside the system.

Claude Code does not give the developer in Lagos talent she does not have. It does not provide training she has not acquired. It does not eliminate the real and persistent inequalities of connectivity, infrastructure, economic stability, and access to capital that continue to constrain creative production in the developing world. What it does — and this is not nothing, this is transformative — is lower the cost of each creative attempt to near zero. A developer in Dhaka paying out of pocket at local wage rates faces a meaningful cost constraint. This inequality will diminish as the cost of inference falls, as it has fallen dramatically for every previous computational technology. But in the current moment, the cost structure creates a gradient of opportunity that partially undermines the democratization thesis.

And there is a subtler concern that Simonton's framework illuminates. The equal-odds baseline requires genuine creative engagement per attempt. Ramanujan filled notebooks in Kumbakonam. The notebooks were extraordinary. They were also incomplete — limited by the opportunity constraints that prevented him from producing at the scale his talent warranted. But scale the picture up. When millions of humans use the same AI tool, trained on the same data, optimized by the same algorithms, the aggregate effect is a narrowing of the creative distribution. Each individual human-AI collaboration may be distinctive. The population of all human-AI collaborations trends toward the center.

This is not a conspiracy. It is not a design flaw. It is a mathematical consequence of optimization for coherence across a shared training distribution. The AI does not intend to homogenize creative output. It produces the most statistically probable output given its inputs, and when those inputs converge — same tool, same training data, same interface — the outputs converge as well.

The Price equation quantifies the cost. Cultural evolution depends on variation. Variation is the raw material from which selection produces progress. This is not an argument against AI. It is an argument for the structures that preserve diversity in an ecosystem whose dominant tool tends toward convergence. The Price equation predicts that without such structures, the creative gene pool narrows even as the creative population expands.

What would such structures look like?

Institutional support for creative work that diverges from the AI-generated mainstream. Funding mechanisms that reward originality over coherence.
