But the accomplishment is partly the tool's, not hers. The distinction between personal efficacy — the capability that belongs to the individual and persists independent of any particular tool — and system efficacy — the capability of the person-plus-tool system — collapses in the subjective experience of accomplishment. The worker who produces extraordinary output using an AI tool experiences the output as evidence of her own capability. The tool becomes transparent in the way all well-designed tools become transparent with use: it recedes from attention, and the output appears to flow directly from the worker's intention to its realization, the tool serving as an invisible medium rather than an active collaborator.

But if the high scores reflect inflated rather than personal efficacy, the interpretation is wrong. The worker may be at significant risk for a sudden collapse of professional self-concept if tool conditions change. The high efficacy score does not indicate resilience. It indicates dependency — and the dependency makes the worker more vulnerable, not less, to disruptions in the tool environment.

This analysis suggests that measurement of efficacy in the AI age requires a distinction the original MBI did not make. Both personal and system efficacy are real. Both contribute to professional accomplishment. But they have different implications for vulnerability, and an instrument that conflates them will systematically misidentify the risk profile of AI-augmented workers. A worker scoring high on efficacy who cannot accurately distinguish her own contribution from the tool's contribution is not flourishing on the third dimension. She is exposed on it — exposed in a way the existing scores cannot detect.

The distinction between personal and system efficacy is methodologically challenging to operationalize, because the inflation is experiential rather than cognitive. The worker does not experience the tool as separate from herself. Assessment must capture a distinction that the experience itself obscures. Items that ask directly — "How much of your accomplishment is due to AI tools?" — will likely produce inaccurate responses, because the experiential fusion of personal and system capability makes accurate attribution difficult even for reflective workers.

More promising approaches might assess the worker's sense of capability across different tool conditions: "I feel confident in my ability to do my core work without AI assistance." "If my AI tools were unavailable for a week, I would still feel competent in my professional responsibilities." "I can clearly identify which aspects of my recent accomplishments depend on AI tools and which reflect my own expertise." These items probe the distinction indirectly, assessing the worker's capacity to maintain a stable professional self-concept across changes in tool availability — which is the operational definition of personal efficacy as distinct from system efficacy.

The 2024 study published in Nature Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, which applied Maslach's framework to AI adoption across 416 professionals, found that self-efficacy in AI learning moderated the relationship between AI adoption and burnout. Workers who felt capable of learning to use AI tools experienced less burnout than those who did not. This finding is consistent with the efficacy inflation analysis but addresses only one direction of the vulnerability. The worker who can distinguish personal from system efficacy is better prepared for disruptions in the tool environment, because her professional identity is anchored in capabilities that persist across tool changes. The worker whose identity is anchored in system efficacy is vulnerable to any change in the system, and the vulnerability is proportional to the degree of inflation.

AI tools complicate this prescription through a mechanism the Berkeley researchers documented with particular clarity: each individual task requires less effort, but the number of tasks expands faster than the effort per task contracts.
