The feature nobody asked for was the one that saved the product.

We were three weeks from launching a new version of Napster Station, and the engineering was solid. The conversational AI worked. The audio routing was clean. The hardware was ready. Everything functioned. And I hated it.

Not the performance. The performance was excellent. I hated the way it felt. The transitions between states were abrupt. The visual feedback when a user approached was technically correct but emotionally dead. The typography on the display communicated nothing except that someone had picked a default. The whole thing worked perfectly and meant nothing.
