The calculation I never ran was the one about myself.

I have spent my entire career investing. Not in stocks — in skills, in teams, in the accumulated intuition that comes from decades of building technology products. I never thought of it as investment. I thought of it as becoming. You learn a language, a framework, a way of seeing systems. You debug for ten thousand hours and something deposits in your nervous system that no documentation can transmit. You call it experience. You call it expertise. You call it who you are.

Gary Becker would call it capital. And capital depreciates.

That single reframing hit me harder than any philosophical argument about smoothness or friction or the nature of consciousness. Because depreciation is not a metaphor. It
