The question that broke something open for me was not about intelligence. It was about a supermarket.

Jean Lave studied grocery shoppers in Orange County in the 1980s. She gave them arithmetic problems in two settings: in the aisles, where they were comparing prices and managing real household budgets, and on paper, where the problems were mathematically identical but stripped of every contextual detail. In the supermarket, they scored near ninety-eight percent. On paper, fifty-nine.
