The construction must accelerate. The evidence demands it. The children demand it. The river demands it.

That is the sentence I cannot get past. It is Owen's sentence, delivered across two centuries with undiminished force. The means are at hand. The evidence is clear. The only obstacle is the will to act on evidence that is clear but inconvenient.

I am a builder. I will keep building dams. But Owen taught me that the dam I build alone, however well-maintained, redirects only a local stretch of river. The river requires engineering at a scale no individual builder can achieve. The institutions must be built. They must be built now. And the builders who benefit most from the current arrangement — people like me — must be the ones who demand them, because we understand, from the inside, what happens when the river flows without constraint.

Owen would say: the rational course of action is obvious. He said it his entire life. He was right every time. The question was never whether he was right. The question was whether being right would be enough.

It was not enough for Owen. It will not be enough for us. We need the institutions. We need them now. And waiting for "eventually" is a luxury that the children entering school this morning cannot afford.
