Collective bargaining. Two words that sound like they belong in a civics textbook you left on a bus in high school. Two words that carry zero voltage in a room full of builders arguing about context windows and inference costs and twenty-fold productivity multipliers. I nearly dismissed them. I am glad I did not.

Beatrice Webb gave that concept its name. She also gave us something harder to summarize — a method. She went to where work was actually performed. She sat at the workbenches. She recorded the temperature of the room, the quality of the light, the arithmetic of piece rates that guaranteed exhaustion without guaranteeing subsistence.
