The sentence that undid me was one I wrote myself.
In The Orange Pill, I described the imagination-to-artifact ratio — the distance between a human idea and its realization — and celebrated the moment that distance collapsed to the width of a conversation. I meant it. I still mean it. The collapse is real, and it is extraordinary, and it has changed what I can build in ways I could not have imagined five years ago.
But Maryanne Wolf asked a question I had not thought to ask, and the question rearranged everything.
Not whether the tools work. They work. Not whether they expand capability. They do. The question was about the brain that meets the tool. Whether that brain has been built. Whether the circuits required to evaluate what the tool produces — to catch the hollow passage dressed in good prose, to feel the wrongness beneath the polish, to distinguish between output that sounds true and output that is true — whether those circuits exist in the person sitting at the keyboard.

This is Wolf's foundational challenge to the AI discourse, and it deserves to be stated with the directness it requires: the cognitive capacities that the AI age demands most urgently — judgment, critical analysis, empathic imagination, the ability to evaluate machine-generated output and determine whether it is trustworthy — are capacities that must be constructed through years of deep reading practice. They cannot be downloaded. They cannot be prompted into existence. They cannot be acquired by asking an AI to summarize the texts that would have built them. They exist only in brains that have done the reading, and they are absent from brains that have not.

It generates fluent, confident, well-structured text that requires evaluation rather than construction. The builder who works primarily through AI interaction is placing demands on neural circuits for prompt construction, output review, and iterative refinement. These are genuine cognitive skills, and the circuits that support them are genuinely strengthened by practice. But they are not the circuits that produce the judgment Wolf identifies as the irreplaceable human contribution. The judgment circuits are the deep reading circuits — the ones that sustain attention across complex arguments, that draw inferences the text does not state, that evaluate evidence against alternatives, that imagine consequences for people unlike the evaluator. These circuits are built by deep reading. They are maintained by deep reading. And they are eroded by environments that replace deep reading with faster, smoother, more frictionless forms of information processing.
Wolf's framework does not lead to a rejection of AI tools. She has been explicit about this — she does not advocate for the abandonment of digital technology any more than she advocates for the abandonment of electric light. What she advocates for is the deliberate construction and maintenance of the reading circuit alongside the use of digital tools — what she calls the "bi-literate brain," a brain capable of deploying both deep reading circuits and digital processing circuits, each in the domain where it is most appropriate. The bi-literate brain is not a compromise. It is a synthesis, more capable than either the pure deep reader or the pure screen processor because it can operate in both modes and choose between them based on the demands of the task.
But the bi-literate brain requires that the deep reading circuit be built first, during the critical developmental window when the brain's plasticity is greatest, and maintained afterward through sustained practice. The digital processing circuits develop readily in a digital environment — they are built by the very media that saturate the modern world. The deep reading circuits do not develop readily in a digital environment. They must be deliberately cultivated, through educational practices that protect time for sustained reading, through organizational cultures that value deep comprehension alongside rapid production, through individual discipline that resists the gravitational pull of the screen toward scanning and skimming.
As Wolf told the Center for Humane Technology in 2025: "In the interest of efficiency, we can do all this faster and better if we're using these technological devices that augment... the reality is what we need as learners are the efforts." The efforts. Not the outputs. Not the products. The cognitive efforts themselves — the sustained, difficult, sometimes frustrating process of wrestling with complex material until understanding emerges. The efforts build the brain. The outputs, however impressive, do not.
The reading brain was never guaranteed. Five thousand years of literate civilization built it. A generation of frictionless digital fluency could unbuild it. And the tools we have created to augment human intelligence will amplify whatever cognitive architecture they encounter — the deep reading brain's judgment with equal fidelity as the scanning brain's fluency. For decades, McLuhan's claim inhabited the borderlands between insight and provocation — widely quoted, rarely tested, impossible to verify with the tools available to mid-twentieth-century science. Maryanne Wolf's research provides what McLuhan lacked: neuroimaging evidence that the medium of reading physically shapes the neural circuits the reading brain develops. The reader adapts. Research on eye-tracking during screen reading reveals a characteristic pattern: the F-shaped scan. The reader processes the first few lines of a section with moderate attention, then scans down the left margin, selecting fragments, extracting keywords, and moving on. The F-shaped scan is not a conscious reading strategy. Following a chain of logic across forty pages demands sustained linear processing — the reader must hold earlier premises in working memory while processing later ones, building a mental representation that deepens and complexifies as the argument develops. The F-shaped scan does not do this. It cannot do this. Its architecture is designed for extraction, not construction. And a brain that practices extraction builds extraction circuits. A brain that practices construction builds construction circuits. The brain does not distinguish between the two. It simply strengthens whatever it practices.
Wolf describes this as the brain's "use it or lose it" principle applied to the cognitive processes that define deep reading. This is where the analysis must turn to artificial intelligence, because the AI interface is a medium, and like every medium before it, it is shaping the cognitive habits of the minds that use it. The shape is specific, identifiable, and consequential.
When a knowledge worker collaborates with an AI tool, the interaction follows a characteristic pattern: the worker describes a problem or intention in natural language, the AI produces an output, the worker evaluates the output, requests modifications, evaluates again, and iterates until the output meets the worker's standards. This interaction pattern — prompt, evaluate, refine, repeat — develops genuine cognitive skills: the ability to articulate intentions clearly, to evaluate outputs against criteria, to identify gaps between intention and execution, to direct iterative refinement toward a desired result. These are real skills. The circuits that support them are genuinely strengthened by practice.
But consider what the interaction pattern does not require. It does not require the worker to sustain attention across a complex argument for extended periods. The AI produces outputs in discrete chunks, each one short enough to evaluate without the sustained concentration that a forty-page argument demands. It does not require the worker to construct understanding from scratch. The AI provides a starting point — often a highly competent one — and the worker's cognitive task is evaluation and refinement rather than original construction. It does not require the worker to sit with uncertainty for extended periods. The AI provides confident, fluent responses within seconds, and the tolerance for the discomfort of not-knowing — the cognitive patience that Wolf identifies as foundational to deep reading — is never exercised because the discomfort is never experienced.
Over time — weeks, months, years of daily AI-assisted work — the brain reorganizes. The circuits for prompt construction and output evaluation strengthen. The circuits for sustained comprehension, original construction, and tolerance of uncertainty weaken. The medium has shaped the mind.
The consequence is not that AI-assisted workers become less intelligent. Intelligence is not a single quantity that increases or decreases. The consequence is that AI-assisted workers become differently intelligent — their cognitive architecture optimized for the specific demands of AI-assisted work and de-optimized for the demands that AI-assisted work does not place upon them. They become excellent at rapid evaluation and iterative refinement. They become less capable of the sustained, independent, uncertainty-tolerant cognition that deep judgment requires.
Wolf herself recognized this dynamic in her own cognitive life, and her candor about it constitutes some of the most valuable testimony in the reading neuroscience literature. She described the experience of sitting down with a complex academic text after years of screen-dominated reading and discovering that she could not sustain attention through the argument. Not because the text was too difficult. Not because her background knowledge had diminished. The screen trained brains to scan instead of read. The AI interface is training brains to evaluate instead of understand. Each transition moves the cognitive center of gravity further from the deep processing that builds judgment and closer to the surface processing that produces the appearance of judgment without its neural substrate. Each transition feels like progress — the work moves faster, the outputs are more polished, the productivity metrics improve. And each transition deposits one less layer of the cognitive soil that genuine understanding requires.
The question Wolf's framework forces is not whether AI tools are valuable. They are. The question is whether the cognitive architecture that makes their value accessible — the deep reading brain, with its circuits for sustained attention, inferential reasoning, critical analysis, and empathic imagination — will survive the medium that delivers them.

It immediately, automatically, without conscious effort, activates relevant prior knowledge — connecting what is being read to what is already known. The activation is not a lookup operation, the way a search engine retrieves documents matching a query. It is a resonance operation — the new information vibrates through the existing knowledge network, activating not just directly relevant nodes but adjacent, analogous, and even metaphorically related knowledge. The result is that the deep reader processes new information in context. The fact does not float on the surface of consciousness. Research on background knowledge and reading comprehension has produced one of the most robust findings in cognitive science: background knowledge is the single strongest predictor of reading comprehension, stronger than vocabulary, stronger than decoding skill, stronger than measured general intelligence. Readers with extensive background knowledge in a domain comprehend texts in that domain more accurately, more deeply, and more efficiently than readers without that knowledge, even when the knowledge-poor readers possess superior general reading ability. The knowledge is not a bonus that makes good reading better. It is the substrate without which good reading cannot occur.
The implication for AI-assisted work is direct. When a builder describes a problem to an AI system, the quality of the description — its precision, its contextual richness, its anticipation of relevant constraints and complications — depends on the builder's background knowledge. The builder with extensive background knowledge describes the problem in terms that locate it within a web of related considerations. The builder with limited background knowledge describes the surface of the problem without the contextual depth that would make the AI's response genuinely useful. Both receive outputs. Both outputs may function. But the knowledge-rich description produces an output embedded in genuine understanding, while the knowledge-poor description produces an output that is technically correct and contextually unmoored.
Background knowledge is built through reading. Not exclusively — conversation, experience, and observation contribute. But reading is the only practice that combines the breadth of accessible domains (anything that has been written about), the depth of sustained engagement (hours of immersion rather than minutes of conversation), and the specific neural demands (decoding, comprehending, integrating) that deposit knowledge into the deep, interconnected networks that automatic activation requires. The reader who has spent years reading across multiple domains — history, science, philosophy, literature, technology, economics — possesses a knowledge network of extraordinary richness. The scanner who has spent those same years extracting key information from screens possesses a thinner network, because the scanning process does not engage the integrative mechanisms that deep reading activates.
Inferential reasoning is the second process, and it is the one that most directly produces what ordinary language calls insight. Deep reading requires the reader to draw conclusions that the text implies but does not state. The text presents A and B. The reader infers C. The inference is not given by the text. It is constructed by the reader's brain, through the activation of background knowledge, the recognition of logical relationships, and the generation of conclusions that follow from premises the text has established.
This operation — constructing meaning that the source material implies but does not contain — is the cognitive operation that underlies expert judgment in every domain. The physician who diagnoses a complex case is drawing inferences from symptoms that individually suggest multiple conditions but that, taken together and read through the lens of the physician's background knowledge, point toward a specific diagnosis that no single symptom states. The engineer who anticipates a failure mode is inferring consequences that the system's specification does not mention but that follow from the specification's interactions with physical constraints the specification does not address.
