In The Orange Pill, I described the vertigo of this moment — the exhilaration and the terror of building alongside a machine that thinks at the speed of inference. I described the nights I could not stop. The flight over the Atlantic where the exhilaration drained and what remained was compulsion dressed as productivity. The methodology was straightforward: give subjects a task, watch which brain regions consumed more oxygen, and map the neural geography of thinking. Subtract the resting baseline from the active state, and what remained was the signature of cognition — the brain regions that lit up when the mind went to work.
The subtraction was supposed to be clean. Rest was the null condition, the neurological equivalent of silence against which the signal of thought could be measured. Nobody was interested in the baseline. The baseline was nothing. The baseline was the brain doing nothing.
Except the baseline was not nothing.
When Raichle and his colleagues examined the resting scans more carefully, they found a pattern of brain activity that was not random noise. It was organized. It was consistent across subjects. And it was metabolically expensive — the resting brain, it turned out, consumed nearly as much energy as the working brain. In some regions, it consumed more. The default mode network does not activate on command. It activates when external demands relent. It requires the specific cognitive condition that the productivity culture of AI-augmented work is systematically eliminating: unstructured time. Time without a task. Time without a prompt. Time in which the brain, freed from the obligation to process incoming information, turns inward and begins the slow, metabolically expensive, absolutely essential work of making sense of what has already happened.
The builder who fills every pause with AI-assisted work is not merely being productive. She is preventing her brain from performing the cognitive operations that transform productivity into understanding. The code ships. The features land. The output accumulates. And somewhere beneath the surface, the neural system that would have woven that output into a coherent understanding of what she is building, and why, and for whom, and whether it matters — that system never gets the chance to activate.

The promise of AI tutoring systems — adaptive learning platforms, chatbot teachers, algorithmic curricula — rests on the assumption that learning is fundamentally an information-transfer problem. The student needs to know certain things. The teacher's job is to convey those things as efficiently as possible. AI does this better than humans: it is infinitely patient, always available, capable of adapting to each student's pace and level, never frustrated, never distracted, never having a bad day.

Consider the engineer from Trivandrum whom Segal describes — the woman who spent eight years on backend systems and had never written a line of frontend code. When Claude removed the implementation barrier, she built a complete user-facing feature in two days. The output was real. The capability expansion was real. But Immordino-Yang's framework prompts a question that the productivity metrics cannot answer: did the engineer understand the frontend work she had just done? If she struggled with Claude — if she encountered confusions that forced her to think, if she experienced the satisfaction of understanding why a particular approach worked and another did not, if the emotional texture of the experience was rich enough to activate the neural systems that encode significance — then she may have learned deeply despite the compressed timeline. The tool does not preclude depth. But if the interaction was frictionless, if the answers arrived so quickly that confusion never had time to develop, if the emotional flatness of efficient information delivery characterized the experience — then she has the output without the understanding. She can build a frontend feature. She may not be able to diagnose one that breaks in a way she has not previously encountered.
Immordino-Yang's work does not condemn AI-assisted learning. It specifies the conditions under which learning — real learning, the kind that transforms the learner — actually occurs. Those conditions are emotional: the learner must care. They are temporal: caring takes time to develop, and the neural processes that encode emotional significance are slow, operating on a timescale of minutes and hours rather than the seconds that AI interaction typically demands. And then something changes. Not a visible change. Not an alarm on the monitor. Not a finding that the textbook would flag as abnormal. Something the surgeon feels in her hands — a resistance that is subtly wrong, a texture that does not match the expected geography, a quality of the tissue that says, before any conscious analysis has occurred, that something here is not what it should be.
The surgeon pauses. She has no words for what she has detected. If pressed, she might say "it didn't feel right" — a description that sounds imprecise to the point of uselessness but that carries, compressed into those four words, the accumulated somatic knowledge of thousands of hours of practice. Her body knows something her mind has not yet formulated. And the body's knowledge, in this moment, is more reliable than any imaging system, any checklist, any algorithm optimized on population-level data that cannot account for this specific patient's specific anatomy at this specific moment.
This is what Immordino-Yang's research on embodied cognition describes at the neurological level. Understanding — deep, functional, reliable understanding — is not a purely cerebral phenomenon. It is not confined to the cortex, not reducible to the manipulation of symbols, not equivalent to the possession of information however comprehensive. Understanding involves the whole organism. Artificial intelligence does not have a body. This observation, often dismissed as obvious, carries implications that the AI discourse has not fully absorbed.
A 2025 paper in AI & Society argued that large language models "lack 'being-in-the-world,' which makes it impossible for them to represent the world in a practically sensible way." The paper drew on Heideggerian phenomenology, but the neuroscience makes the same point in more empirical terms. When Claude produces a diagnosis, a design, a piece of code, it is manipulating representations that have no somatic anchoring. The representations are accurate. They may be more comprehensive than what any individual human could produce from memory. But they lack the felt dimension — the quality of having been lived through, of carrying the weight of prior experience in the body — that gives human understanding its functional depth.
Consider the senior engineer from Trivandrum whom Segal describes — the one who spent his first two days oscillating between excitement and terror, and who arrived at the end of the week recognizing that the twenty percent of his work that remained after AI took over the implementation was the part that mattered most. That twenty percent — the judgment about what to build, the architectural instinct about what would break, the taste that separated a feature users loved from one they merely tolerated — was not a set of rules he could articulate. It was embodied knowledge. Knowledge accumulated through years of making decisions, seeing their consequences, feeling the satisfaction of systems that held and the specific discomfort of systems that did not.
Segal describes this engineer's knowledge as having been "deposited, layer by layer, through thousands of hours of patient work." The geological metaphor is neuroscientifically precise.
