The price was wrong. That is the sentence I kept turning over after reading Stiglitz, and it is the one that changed how I think about everything I built in Trivandrum.

I had been telling the story of the twenty-fold multiplier as a story about capability. Twenty engineers, each doing the work of a team, at a hundred dollars a month. The numbers were real. The exhilaration was real. The expansion of what each person could attempt was genuinely new. I wrote about it in *The Orange Pill* as a story about human potential unleashed.

Stiglitz made me see the price tag I had not examined.

Not the hundred dollars. The other price — the one the market was quietly setting while I celebrated the output. Who captures the surplus when one person does the work of twenty? The technology does not answer that question. The institutional environment does. And the institutional environment, as Stiglitz has spent a career demonstrating with mathematical precision, is rigged — not by conspiracy, but by the structural logic of markets that measure what capital owners care about and ignore what everyone else needs.

I described the quarterly pressure in my book. The boardroom arithmetic. The investor who understands headcount reduction in his bones. I framed my choice to keep the team as a moral decision. Stiglitz reframed it as an institutional failure. My choice was unusual not because I am unusually good but because the system makes the opposite choice rational. The market rewards extraction. It punishes patience. And no number of individual acts of generosity will fix a structure that incentivizes the opposite.

This is why Stiglitz matters right now, in the middle of the most powerful productivity expansion in human history. Not because AI is bad — he does not think it is bad. Because the amplifier I have spent a book celebrating does not operate in a vacuum. It operates inside an economy. And that economy will determine whether the amplification reaches the developer in Lagos or concentrates in the hands of people who already have more than they need.

The invisible hand, Stiglitz showed, is not weak. In many of the cases that matter most, it is fictional. The AI revolution needs visible hands — institutions, policies, democratic choices — or the gains will flow exactly where every previous technological revolution's gains have flowed when no one built the dams.

This book is a lens I did not have when I wrote *The Orange Pill*. It is the economics underneath the exhilaration.

In 1776, Adam Smith proposed that individuals pursuing their own self-interest would be led, as if by an invisible hand, to promote the public good. The proposition was elegant, intuitive, and wrong — or rather, right only under conditions so restrictive that they almost never obtain in the real world. Two centuries later, Joseph Stiglitz demonstrated, with the mathematical rigor that earns Nobel Prizes, exactly why. Markets with imperfect information do not converge on efficient outcomes. They converge on outcomes that favor the informed at the expense of the uninformed, the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable, the positioned at the expense of the talented. The invisible hand, Stiglitz showed, is not merely weak. In many of the cases that matter most for human welfare, it is fictional — a story told by those who benefit from the belief that markets left alone will sort things out.

The story has been told with particular enthusiasm by the architects of the artificial intelligence revolution. The technology works. The productivity gains are real. The twenty-fold multiplier that Edo Segal describes in The Orange Pilltwenty engineers in Trivandrum, each operating with the leverage of a full team, at a cost of one hundred dollars per person per month — is not marketing. It is an observed, repeatable phenomenon that represents a genuine expansion of human productive capability. The amplifier metaphor at the center of that book captures something true: AI carries whatever signal it is fed, and the quality of the output depends on the quality of the input. Feed it carelessness, receive carelessness at scale. Feed it genuine craft, receive craft carried further than any previous tool could carry it.

But an amplifier does not operate in a vacuum. It operates within an economic structure. And the economic structure determines who feeds it, what signals are available to be fed, who captures the amplified output, and who bears the cost when the amplification produces consequences the amplifier did not intend and the market does not price. The question "Are you worth amplifying?" — the question at the heart of The Orange Pill — is a profound one. But it contains an assumption that economics cannot leave unexamined: that the relationship between the quality of your input and the value you capture from the output is direct, transparent, and fair. That the market rewards worthy amplification and penalizes unworthy amplification. That the amplifier, like the invisible hand, will sort things out.

It will not. Stiglitz's entire body of work is a sustained demonstration of why it will not, and the AI economy exhibits every condition under which markets fail most dramatically.

Start with the simplest version of the distribution problem. The pie is growing. AI-assisted production generates more output per unit of human effort than any previous technology. The question every economist should be asking, and the question that the technology discourse systematically avoids, is not whether the pie grows but how the slices are allocated. This is not a secondary concern. It is the central economic question of the AI era, and every previous technological revolution provides evidence about what happens when it goes unanswered.

The pattern is remarkably consistent. The spinning jenny grew the pie. The power loom grew the pie. Electrification grew the pie. Containerized shipping, the personal computer, the internet — each grew the pie by measurable, sometimes enormous, amounts. And in each case, the growth was captured disproportionately by the owners of capital, while the costs of transition — the displacement, the devaluation of skills, the destruction of communities built around the old productive order — were borne disproportionately by those who possessed only labor.

This is not a natural law. It is an institutional outcome. Different institutions would have produced different distributions. The eight-hour day, the weekend, the minimum wage, collective bargaining — these were institutional interventions that redirected a portion of the productivity gains toward labor. They did not arise naturally from the market. They were fought for, legislated, enforced, and maintained against constant pressure from the capital interests that preferred the prior distribution. The gains from the Industrial Revolution did eventually reach broad populations. But "eventually" meant generations, and the transition was marked by suffering on a scale that the aggregate productivity numbers do not capture.

Stiglitz's contribution to this analysis is the identification of the specific mechanisms through which concentration occurs. It is not enough to observe that the rich get richer. The question is how — through what channels, exploiting what failures, leveraging what asymmetries. Three mechanisms are central.

The first is information asymmetry applied to the amplifier itself. The companies that build AI models possess information about those models — their capabilities, their limitations, their failure modes, their biases — that the companies deploying them do not possess, and that the workers and consumers affected by them possess even less. This asymmetry is not incidental. It is structural. The model builders benefit from maintaining the asymmetry because it preserves their competitive position and their pricing power. The deployers operate with incomplete understanding of what the tool actually does, which means they cannot accurately assess its value, its risks, or the distribution of costs it creates. The workers whose productivity is being multiplied often understand least of all — they experience the amplification as empowerment without seeing the structural shift in value capture that accompanies it.

Segal describes this honestly in The Orange Pill when he recounts the Trivandrum training. His engineers experienced a genuine expansion of capability. They built things they could not have built before. They crossed disciplinary boundaries that had previously been impassable. The experience was, by their own account, thrilling. But the economic question that thrilling experience does not answer is: who owns the expanded output? The engineers are salaried. Their compensation does not automatically adjust to reflect their amplified productivity. The value of the twenty-fold multiplier flows, in the first instance, to the company — to its revenue, its margin, its equity valuation. Whether it flows back to the engineers in the form of higher wages, greater autonomy, or investment in their continued development is a decision, not an inevitability. Segal made that decision generously. The institutional structures that would ensure other employers make the same decision do not exist.

The second mechanism is the conversion of productivity gains into capital returns rather than labor returns. When a company discovers that five people with AI can do the work of one hundred, the market does not reward the company for keeping all one hundred employed at higher capability. The market rewards the company for capturing the ninety-five-person savings as margin. This is not because markets are evil. It is because markets optimize for the metric they are given, and the metric they are given — quarterly earnings, share price, return on equity — measures capital returns, not labor welfare. The boardroom conversation Segal describes, the quarterly pressure to convert the twenty-fold multiplier into headcount reduction, is not an aberration. It is the normal, predictable, rational operation of a market that measures what capital owners care about and ignores what workers need.

Stiglitz has documented this mechanism across decades and industries. The share of national income flowing to labor has been declining in developed economies since the 1980s, while the share flowing to capital has been rising. AI accelerates this trend because it amplifies the substitutability of labor — the degree to which capital (in the form of AI tools) can replace labor in the production process. When labor is less substitutable, workers have bargaining power: the employer needs them specifically, and that need translates into wages. When labor becomes more substitutable, bargaining power shifts to capital: the employer can replace the worker with a tool, and the threat of that replacement disciplines wages downward even when the replacement does not actually occur.

The twenty-fold multiplier is, from the perspective of labor economics, a twenty-fold increase in the substitutability of labor. Not for all tasks — Segal is correct that judgment, taste, and the capacity to ask generative questions remain scarce — but for a sufficient range of tasks that the bargaining position of most knowledge workers has fundamentally shifted. The senior developer whose implementation skills were his bargaining chip discovers that implementation is now commodity-priced. His judgment may be more valuable than ever, but the market has not yet developed the mechanisms to price judgment accurately, which means the transition period is one in which his bargaining power has decreased even as his potential contribution has increased.

The third mechanism is what Stiglitz calls rent-seeking — the extraction of value through structural position rather than through the creation of genuine productive value. In the AI economy, the most significant rents accrue to the companies that control the platforms, the data, and the network effects. These companies did not necessarily create the most value. They occupied the positions from which value could be extracted. The training data that makes large language models possible was produced by millions of creators, writers, coders, artists, and researchers whose work was scraped, processed, and incorporated without compensation. The value of that training data is now captured by a handful of companies whose market position allows them to charge for access to the capabilities that the collective labor of millions produced.

Stiglitz told Scientific American in early 2025 that he was "very worried" about AI supercharging inequality. The worry was not abstract. It was grounded in the specific observation that AI is being developed within an economic system where workers already lack bargaining power, where the institutions that once counterbalanced capital concentration have been systematically weakened, and where the political power of the technology industry is being deployed to prevent the construction of new counterbalancing institutions. "Unfortunately," he said, "the tech bros, who are obviously advocates of this, are at the same time pushing for smaller government, which will undermine the ability of the government to do exactly what is needed in order to make a successful transition."

This is the self-reinforcing cycle that Stiglitz has documented throughout his career: concentration of wealth produces political power, political power shapes institutions in favor of further concentration, and the resulting institutions produce more inequality. Applied to AI, the cycle operates with particular speed and force. The technology companies that benefit from minimal regulation use their wealth to lobby against regulation. The absence of regulation allows them to capture a greater share of the AI productivity gains. The captured gains fund further lobbying. The cycle accelerates.

The Orange Pill calls for dams — structures that redirect the flow of intelligence toward life. The metaphor is apt, but it requires economic specification. What are the dams, concretely? They are the institutional structures that alter the incentive landscape: tax policies that capture a share of AI-generated productivity gains for public investment; labor protections that prevent the conversion of the twenty-fold multiplier into pure headcount reduction; educational investments that produce the human capital needed to operate at the judgment level; regulatory frameworks that address the information asymmetries between model builders, deployers, and affected populations; and international governance structures that prevent a race to the bottom in which nations compete to attract AI investment by reducing protections for workers and citizens.

These are not radical proposals. They are the same category of institutional interventions that eventually redirected the gains from every previous technological revolution toward broad prosperity. The difference is the speed. The Industrial Revolution's transition played out over generations. The AI transition is playing out over years. The dams need to be built at the speed of the technology, not at the speed of the institutions, and the history of institutional adaptation suggests that institutions rarely move at the speed they need to.

The invisible hand will not build these dams. The invisible hand, to the extent it exists at all, will produce the outcome that markets with imperfect information and concentrated power always produce: gains for the positioned, costs for the exposed, and a discourse that describes this outcome as natural, efficient, and inevitable. The central argument of Stiglitz's career is that it is none of these things. It is a choice. An institutional choice, made by people with power, ratified by an ideology that mistakes the interests of capital for the laws of nature.

The amplifier works. The question is whether the economy it operates within will allow the amplification to reach the people who need it most, or whether it will concentrate the amplified value in the hands of those who need it least. That question will not be answered by technology. It will be answered by politics, by institutions, by the willingness of democratic societies to build the structures that markets will not build for themselves.

The invisible hand has met the amplifier. The hand is, as always, invisible — which is to say, absent. The amplifier is, as always, indifferent. What happens next depends entirely on what we build between them.

Chapter 2: Information Asymmetry in the Age of AI

George Akerlof published "The Market for Lemons" in 1970, after several journals rejected it as trivially obvious. The paper demonstrated that when buyers cannot distinguish good products from bad ones, markets do not simply misprice — they collapse. Sellers of good cars withdraw because the market price, dragged down by the presence of lemons, does not compensate them for their quality. Only the sellers of lemons remain. The market does not find equilibrium. It finds destruction. Quality exits, and what remains is a bazaar of the mediocre.

Stiglitz, along with Michael Spence, extended this insight into a general theory of markets under imperfect information. The 2001 Nobel Prize recognized all three for demonstrating that information asymmetry is not an edge case. It is the normal condition of most markets, and markets operating under it produce outcomes that are neither efficient nor equitable. The seller knows more about the product than the buyer. The employer knows more about the job than the applicant. The insurer knows less about the risk than the insured. In every case, the asymmetry distorts behavior, misallocates resources, and generates outcomes that serve the informed at the expense of the uninformed.

Artificial intelligence has created the largest, fastest-moving information asymmetry in the history of markets. It operates on at least three levels simultaneously, and each level produces a distinct form of market failure.

The first level is the asymmetry between model builders and everyone else. The companies that build large language models — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta — possess deep knowledge about what their models can and cannot do, where they fail, what biases they carry, what data they were trained on, and what the limitations of their safety measures are. This knowledge is proprietary. It is protected by trade secrets, by the competitive dynamics of a market where capability is the primary differentiator, and by the genuine complexity of systems whose behavior is not fully understood even by their creators.

Stiglitz himself tested this asymmetry directly. He recounted that someone trained ChatGPT on his academic output, and he then interrogated the system. "I thought on half the questions it did perfectly reasonably — and on three it was totally wrong," he reported. The system fabricated references. It produced confident, well-structured answers that contained no factual basis. "You're going to have to check it," he concluded — "not only the quality of the answer but also the bias and whether it's gone down a rabbit hole and produced made-up references."

This experience illustrates the asymmetry with precision. Stiglitz, a Nobel laureate who has spent decades in the domain the AI was trained on, could identify the fabrications. A graduate student using the same tool to research Stiglitz's work might not. A policymaker drafting legislation informed by AI-generated summaries of Stiglitz's positions almost certainly would not. The informed user can check the output against deep domain knowledge. The uninformed user receives the output as authoritative because the output presents itself as authoritative — smooth, confident, well-structured, and wrong.

The Orange Pill describes this as Claude's most dangerous failure mode: "confident wrongness dressed in good prose." The description is precise, and its economic implications are severe. When the cost of producing professional-quality output approaches zero, and when the quality of that output is difficult to assess without domain expertise that most consumers do not possess, the market for expertise undergoes the same dynamic Akerlof described for the market for used cars. The lemons drive out the quality.

Here is the mechanism. Before AI, hiring an expert — a lawyer, a consultant, an analyst, a designer — involved a natural quality signal. The work took time. It cost money. The expertise was visible in the process as much as in the product. A client who watched a lawyer spend forty hours on a brief understood, imperfectly but meaningfully, that the brief reflected deep engagement with the problem. The hours were a signal. An expensive, noisy, often misleading signal — but a signal nonetheless.

AI collapses the signal. A lawyer using AI can produce a brief in four hours that is structurally indistinguishable from one produced in forty. The client cannot tell the difference. The brief looks the same. It reads the same. It may even be substantively identical in most respects. But the four-hour brief was not tested against the same depth of understanding. The lawyer who spent forty hours reading cases developed an understanding that would inform her judgment on the next case, and the next, and the next. The lawyer who spent four hours reviewing AI output may have produced an equivalent document without developing the equivalent understanding.

The market cannot price this difference. The client sees two briefs of similar quality and chooses the cheaper one. The lawyer who invested forty hours cannot compete on price with the lawyer who invested four. The deep practitioner is driven from the market not because her work is inferior but because the market cannot distinguish her depth from the AI-assisted surface. This is the lemons dynamic applied to expertise, and it produces the same outcome: quality exits, and what remains is a market in which depth is systematically undervalued because it is systematically invisible.

The second level of asymmetry operates between AI-augmented firms and their workers. The employer who deploys AI tools possesses information about how those tools affect the distribution of value within the firm. The employer knows, or can calculate, that the twenty-fold productivity multiplier reduces the cost of labor per unit of output. The worker experiences the multiplier as empowerment — greater capability, expanded scope, the thrill of building things that were previously impossible. What the worker often does not know, and what the employer has no incentive to reveal, is how the productivity gain is being allocated.

Stiglitz's framework predicts the outcome. When one party to an economic relationship possesses information the other lacks, the informed party captures a disproportionate share of the value. The employer who understands that AI has made each worker twenty times more productive has several options: share the gain with workers through higher wages, invest it in the team's development, or capture it as margin. The market incentivizes the third option. Quarterly earnings reports do not contain a line item for "investment in worker capability." They contain a line item for margin, and the analyst community rewards margin expansion with higher valuations.

The Berkeley study that The Orange Pill examines in its eleventh chapter provides empirical evidence of this dynamic in action. Workers using AI tools worked more, expanded their scope, colonized their breaks with prompts, and experienced intensification that the researchers documented as a precursor to burnout. The employers captured the productivity gains. The workers absorbed the costs — in health, in relationships, in the erosion of cognitive capacity that sustained overwork produces. This is not a market functioning well. It is a market functioning exactly as Stiglitz's theory predicts when information is asymmetric and bargaining power is unequal.

The third level of asymmetry is the most novel and potentially the most consequential: the degradation of the information ecosystem itself. Stiglitz raised this concern directly in a 2026 interview, framing it as a problem of "information externalities." Large language models are trained on the accumulated output of human knowledge production — journalism, research, literature, online discussion. But the same AI systems that depend on this knowledge base are simultaneously undermining the institutions that produce it. News organizations lose revenue as AI-generated summaries replace direct readership. Research institutions face pressure as AI-generated analysis competes with peer-reviewed scholarship. The information ecosystem that feeds the models is being degraded by the models it feeds.

"They'll think that they've gotten highly processed information," Stiglitz warned, "without realizing fully the extent to which all that they've been doing is reprocessing garbage." The dynamic is a feedback loop: AI produces output that enters the training data for future models, which produce output that enters the next generation of training data. Each cycle dilutes the proportion of human-produced, human-verified, human-contextualized knowledge in the data supply. The models become more confident as they become less grounded.

This is an information asymmetry in the deepest sense. The user of an AI system in 2030 will have no way to assess what proportion of the system's training data was produced by humans with genuine expertise versus generated by previous AI systems trained on the output of still earlier AI systems. The provenance of the knowledge is hidden. The confidence of the output is not. The smooth surface conceals the thinning foundation.

Stiglitz also identified the intellectual property dimension of this asymmetry with characteristic precision. AI companies, he noted, have adopted a stance that amounts to: "We have the right to take everybody else's intellectual property, but nobody has the right to take ours." The training data was scraped without compensation from the creators who produced it. The models built on that data are protected by trade secrets and proprietary licensing. The value flows in one direction: from the distributed creators whose work was appropriated to the concentrated platforms that appropriated it. This is not market exchange. It is extraction enabled by the absence of institutional structures that recognize the property rights of creators in their training data.

The policy implications are direct and specific. Markets with severe information asymmetry require disclosure, regulation, and the institutional construction of trust. In the AI economy, this means mandatory disclosure of model capabilities and limitations — not the vague "model cards" that currently serve as industry self-regulation, but substantive, standardized disclosure that allows deployers and affected populations to assess what the tools actually do. It means regulatory frameworks that address the lemons problem in the market for AI-assisted expertise — quality standards, liability frameworks, and professional norms that prevent the systematic underpricing of depth. It means intellectual property regimes that compensate creators for the use of their work in training data, rather than allowing the appropriation that currently characterizes the industry.

And it means investing in the information ecosystem that AI depends on. Stiglitz's warning about the degradation of knowledge production is not merely theoretical. If the institutions that produce high-quality knowledge — investigative journalism, peer-reviewed research, domain-specific expertise developed through years of practice — are undermined by the same technology that feeds on their output, the result is a system that consumes its own foundation. The models get smoother. The knowledge gets thinner. And the asymmetry between what the system appears to know and what it actually knows widens with each generation.

Information asymmetry is not a side effect of the AI economy. It is its defining structural feature. And Stiglitz's career-long demonstration that markets riddled with asymmetry produce outcomes that are neither efficient nor equitable is the most rigorous available warning about what happens when the most powerful amplifier in human history operates within a market that cannot assess its own output.

Chapter 3: The Twenty-Fold Multiplier and the Question of Capture

In February 2026, twenty engineers in Trivandrum, India, each equipped with a one-hundred-dollar-per-month Claude Code subscription, achieved a productivity multiplier that Edo Segal measured at roughly twenty times their previous output. The number is arresting. It suggests that the cost of producing a given unit of software has fallen by approximately ninety-five percent, virtually overnight, for any organization willing to adopt the tool. In the aggregate, this is an unambiguous expansion of productive capacity — the kind of development that economics textbooks describe as an unalloyed good.

Economics textbooks, as Stiglitz has spent a career demonstrating, are frequently wrong about unalloyed goods. The productivity gain is real. The distributional question is where the trouble starts, and the trouble is structural, not incidental.

Begin with what economics calls the "total factor productivity" improvement. When twenty people can do what previously required the effort of several hundred, the surplus — the value produced in excess of the cost — increases dramatically. Someone captures that surplus. The question of who captures it is not determined by the technology. It is determined by the institutional environment in which the technology is deployed: the labor contracts, the ownership structures, the tax codes, the regulatory frameworks, the bargaining power of the parties involved.

In the Trivandrum case, Segal made an explicit choice. He kept the team. He invested the productivity surplus in expanded capability rather than headcount reduction. He describes the quarterly pressure to do otherwise — the boardroom arithmetic, the investor logic that understands margin expansion in its bones. He chose differently, and he is transparent about the fact that his choice was unusual and that the market does not reward it naturally.

Stiglitz's framework explains why the market pushes in the opposite direction. The firms that convert the twenty-fold multiplier into headcount reduction will, in the short term, report higher margins. Higher margins produce higher stock prices. Higher stock prices attract more capital. More capital enables faster growth. The firm that chose to keep its team and invest in capability will, in the short term, report lower margins, receive a lower valuation, attract less capital, and grow more slowly. The market selects for extraction, not investment, because the market measures what it can see in quarterly increments, and extraction is visible while ecosystem investment is not.

This is not a failure of individual decision-making. It is a failure of institutional design. The metrics by which markets evaluate firms — earnings per share, return on equity, revenue per employee — are metrics that reward the conversion of productivity gains into capital returns. There is no standard metric for "investment in human capability." There is no line item on the income statement for "judgment developed" or "institutional knowledge deepened" or "workforce prepared for the next transition." The things that the ecosystem investment produces are real, but they are invisible to the instruments of measurement, and what is invisible to the instruments does not exist in the market's calculus.

Stiglitz and his frequent co-author Anton Korinek modeled this dynamic formally. The weakening operates through a mechanism that labor economists call the "threat effect." Even when an employer does not actually replace workers with AI, the credible threat of replacement disciplines wages downward. And the institutional frameworks for managing displacement — retraining programs, transitional income support, educational reform — are correspondingly less adequate.

Stiglitz proposed one specific institutional response: a shorter work week. If AI increases output per hour of labor, one option is to distribute the gain as reduced working hours rather than reduced headcount. A thirty-hour work week at current wages would allocate the productivity surplus to workers in the form of leisure — a reallocation that Stiglitz frames not as economic sacrifice but as rational preference. "Our objective is not measured GDP; our objective is well-being," he argued. "It could well be that we decide to move to an equilibrium with overall shorter working weeks and more leisure."

The proposal has historical precedent. The forty-hour work week was itself a response to the productivity gains of electrification and assembly-line manufacturing. The eight-hour day was not a natural market outcome. It was an institutional intervention that redirected productivity gains toward labor. "If the tech oligarchs continue in their mindset overall of downscaling government, that will impair the ability of government to facilitate the AI transition. And you know, that's the central boundary that we're facing — that they are creating the conditions that make it impossible for a successful AI transition."

The technology companies that capture the AI productivity surplus use that surplus to fund political activity that prevents the construction of institutions that would redistribute the surplus. Segal's choice in Trivandrum — to keep the team, to invest in capability, to resist the quarterly pressure — is a bet on the second scenario. It is a bet that ecosystem investment produces compounding returns that eventually exceed the short-term returns from extraction. Stiglitz's economics suggests that this bet is likely correct in the long run, but that the market will not naturally reward it in the short run, and that the firms that make the opposite bet — the firms that extract — will outperform in the short run and use their outperformance to shape the institutional environment in favor of further extraction.

The question of who captures the twenty-fold is, ultimately, a question of political economy. It will be answered not by entrepreneurs making individual choices about their individual teams, however admirable those choices may be. It will be answered by the collective institutional choices that democratic societies make about taxation, labor law, educational investment, and the regulation of the most powerful productive technology in human history.

The invisible hand will not make these choices. It never has.

Applied to the AI economy, this means antitrust scrutiny of the model-builder oligopoly, intellectual property frameworks that require licensing and compensation for the use of creative work in training data, and tax policies that recognize the extraordinary rents being generated by ecosystem control and platform monopoly.

The AI industry will resist these interventions with the same arguments that every rent-seeking industry has deployed throughout history: regulation will stifle innovation; the market is self-correcting; the current distribution reflects the natural reward for entrepreneurial risk-taking. These arguments were wrong when they were made by the railroad trusts, the oil monopolies, the telecommunications giants, and the financial industry. They are wrong now, for the same reason: they mistake the interests of the concentrated few for the welfare of the distributed many, and they rely on the fiction of the invisible hand to justify a distribution that the invisible hand did not produce and cannot correct.

The smooth economy that Byung-Chul Han diagnoses and Segal examines is, in Stiglitz's framework, a rent-extraction economy disguised as a meritocracy. The smoothness of the output conceals the roughness of the distribution. The ease of the interface hides the concentration of the returns. The democratization of capability masks the monopolization of capture. And the ideology of innovation — the insistence that what is being produced is value rather than extracted as rent — provides the moral cover that allows the extraction to continue without the political resistance that would, in a more transparent system, demand redistribution.

The dams that The Orange Pill calls for are, in this context, anti-rent-seeking institutions. The history of market repricing events suggests that these interventions, if they come at all, come late. The Asian financial crisis produced institutional reform — eventually. The 2008 financial crisis produced regulatory change — partially, and partially reversed. The pattern is consistent: the market reprices rapidly, the costs fall immediately, and the institutional response arrives years later, after the damage has compounded and the displaced populations have absorbed costs that redistribution could have mitigated.

The AI repricing is following this pattern with the acceleration that characterizes every aspect of the AI transition. The costs are falling now. The institutional response has not begun. And the gap between the speed of the repricing and the speed of the response is the space in which a generation of knowledge workers — the people whose skills were the foundation of the old economy — will bear the cost of a transition whose gains they may never share.

Stiglitz's observation about the Great Depression resonates here with uncomfortable precision. The agricultural productivity revolution grew the economy while destroying the livelihoods of millions of farmers. "We didn't need as many farmers, but we had no ability to move people out of the rural sector." There is a developer in Lagos who did not appear in any economic model until recently.

She has a computer science degree from the University of Lagos. She has been writing code for six years. She has ideas — specific, market-aware ideas about financial services for Nigeria's informal economy, where two hundred million people operate outside the banking system that the formal economy takes for granted. Before 2025, her ideas had no viable path to implementation. She lacked the team, the capital, the institutional infrastructure, and the network of mentors and investors that the technology industry calls an "ecosystem" and that is, in practice, a geography-dependent concentration of advantages.

Claude Code changed part of this equation. The coding leverage available to her is now comparable to the coding leverage available to a developer at a San Francisco startup. She can describe her financial services application in natural language and receive working software. She can cross disciplinary boundaries — frontend, backend, database architecture, API integration — that previously required a team of specialists. The imagination-to-artifact ratio, as The Orange Pill describes it, has collapsed for her as it has for everyone.

Stiglitz would note that the collapse is real and that it is not enough.

The history of economic development is littered with technologies that promised to democratize capability and instead amplified existing advantage. The Green Revolution of the 1960s dramatically increased agricultural productivity in developing countries. The technology worked. Seeds that produced three times the yield of traditional varieties were available to any farmer who could plant them. But the farmers who captured the gains were the ones who could afford the fertilizer, the irrigation, and the land to scale. Smallholders who adopted the new seeds without the complementary inputs often found themselves worse off — indebted for seeds and fertilizer, competing in a market where larger producers had driven down prices. The technology democratized productive potential. The institutional environment concentrated productive returns.

Stiglitz documented the same pattern in globalization. Trade liberalization was supposed to integrate developing economies into the global market, allowing them to capture the gains from comparative advantage. The theory was elegant. The practice was that the rules of global trade were written by and for wealthy nations, and the institutional structures governing trade — the World Trade Organization, the international financial institutions, the bilateral trade agreements — systematically advantaged the already-advantaged. Developing countries gained access to global markets. They did not gain access on equal terms.

The AI democratization follows the same structural logic. The developer in Lagos gains productive capability. She does not gain the complementary assets that convert capability into captured value.

Capital access is the first and most obvious barrier. Building a product requires more than code. It requires infrastructure — servers, domain registration, payment processing, compliance with data protection regulations. These costs are relatively fixed regardless of geography, which means they represent a larger fraction of available resources for a developer in Lagos than for a developer in San Francisco. The San Francisco developer, moreover, operates within an ecosystem of venture capital, angel investors, accelerator programs, and institutional support that can provide capital at terms the Lagos developer cannot access. The venture capital industry invests overwhelmingly in companies with headquarters in a handful of wealthy-country cities. A developer in Lagos building a superior product for a larger addressable market may still fail to raise capital because the capital allocation mechanisms are biased toward proximity, familiarity, and the specific networks that wealthy-country developers inhabit.

Market access is the second barrier. The developer in Lagos can build the product. She cannot reach the market at the same cost. Customer acquisition in digital markets is increasingly dominated by platform economics — the app stores, the advertising networks, the social media platforms that control the channels through which software reaches users. But the AI Act addresses the supply side: what AI companies may build, what they must disclose, what standards their systems must meet. It does not address the demand side: what citizens, workers, students, and parents need to navigate the transition wisely. A worker whose job has been restructured by AI deployment does not benefit from knowing that the AI system met a conformity assessment standard. She benefits from retraining programs, transitional income support, and institutional guidance about how to convert her existing capabilities into capabilities the new economy values. The American approach is, if anything, less adequate. Executive orders and voluntary commitments by AI companies constitute the bulk of the governance framework. The voluntary commitments by AI companies are precisely as durable as the business incentives that support them, which is to say, not durable at all. When compliance conflicts with competitive advantage, the advantage wins. Stiglitz has documented this dynamic in every industry he has studied: voluntary self-regulation works until it becomes expensive, at which point it stops working.

The demand-side deficit is the more dangerous failure, and it is almost entirely unaddressed by any governance framework in any jurisdiction. Stiglitz's specific proposal for a shorter work week — distributing the productivity surplus as leisure rather than displacement — belongs in this category.
