Not works in the demo sense — the slick walkthrough, the investor deck, the hockey-stick projection that gets everyone nodding. Works in the way that Jonas Salk meant it when he spent years testing a vaccine before injecting it into children. Works in the sense that you've thought about what happens after the celebration, after the church bells stop ringing, after the product ships and enters the bloodstream of a civilization that didn't ask for the side effects.

I've been building in technology for most of my adult life, and I'll be honest: the question Salk kept asking — *do we have the wisdom to match our power?* — used to feel like a philosopher's luxury. Something you nod at during a keynote and forget by the time you're back at your laptop. You're shipping. You're scaling. You're solving the problem in front of you. Wisdom is for people who aren't on deadline.

Then I started building with AI, and Salk's question stopped being philosophical. It became operational.

Because here's what I know now, in my hands, every single day: the amplifier is real. It is not theoretical. It is not coming soon. It is sitting in my workflow, multiplying whatever I feed it. And the terrifying thing — the thing Salk understood from virology and I'm learning from language models — is that it multiplies *everything*. My clarity and my confusion. My depth and my laziness. Jonas Edward Salk (1914–1995) was an American virologist, medical researcher, and philosopher born in New York City to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. After earning his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1939, he worked with Thomas Francis Jr. on an influenza vaccine before turning his attention to poliomyelitis at the University of Pittsburgh, where he developed the first effective inactivated polio vaccine, announced as safe and effective on April 12, 1955. He famously declined to patent the vaccine, forgoing an estimated seven billion dollars in personal earnings. In 1960, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, collaborating with architect Louis Kahn to create one of the most celebrated research facilities in the world. Then one man's laboratory produced a killed-virus vaccine, tested it on 1.8 million children in the largest public health experiment in American history, and ended the epidemic. Within a decade, polio cases in the United States dropped by over ninety-six percent. Jonas Salk became the most famous scientist in the world. He was offered ticker-tape parades, congressional medals, and every form of reward a grateful nation could devise.

He turned most of them down. And then he did something far stranger than refusing fame. He began asking a question that had almost nothing to do with virology and almost everything to do with the future of the human species: Now that we have the power to alter our own biological trajectory, do we have the wisdom to do it well?

This question — deceptively simple, almost impossibly difficult — would consume the remaining four decades of Salk's life. Salk called this transition the move to Epoch B, and he believed it was not optional. The tools of Epoch A had become powerful enough to destroy the species that created them. Either humanity developed Epoch B consciousness — the capacity to use its power wisely — or it would not survive.

The framework sounds abstract, but Salk meant it with absolute concreteness. Every technological choice, in his view, was an evolutionary choice. When a society decided how to deploy a new capability, it was selecting for certain human traits and against others. It was creating conditions that would favor certain kinds of minds, certain kinds of relationships, certain kinds of communities. This is the lens through which Salk's work becomes indispensable for understanding the present moment. Artificial intelligence, in the specific form it has taken in the early twenty-first century, is the most powerful amplifier the species has ever built. The large language model does not think instead of the human. And like the biological vaccine, it is only as good as the organism receiving it. A mind with depth, judgment, and clarity of purpose receives the amplification and produces work of extraordinary quality and range. A mind without those qualities receives the same amplification and produces more of what it already had: more noise, more speed, more output without more meaning. The amplifier does not discriminate. It multiplies the signal it is given. The question Salk would ask — the question he spent forty years asking in every domain he touched — is not whether the amplifier works. It works. The question is whether we are the kind of organisms that should be amplified.

This question carries an uncomfortable implication. It suggests that the most important preparation for the AI era is not technical but developmental — not learning to use the tool but becoming the kind of person whose use of the tool serves long-term flourishing rather than short-term optimization. It suggests that the crisis of the AI moment is not a crisis of capability but a crisis of character. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which Salk founded in 1960 with architect Louis Kahn, was itself an argument for this position. Salk insisted that the building be beautiful — not merely functional, not optimized for laboratory efficiency, but genuinely, radically beautiful, with its famous travertine courtyard open to the Pacific sky and a thin channel of water running toward the ocean like a line drawn toward infinity. Salk understood that environments shape organisms. Chapter 2: Epoch A and Epoch B — The Evolutionary Inflection

Jonas Salk looked at this curve and saw the history — and the future — of the human species.

The insight was not complicated. What was complicated was its implications. The waste products of growth — pollution, habitat destruction, resource depletion, social fragmentation — begin to constrain further expansion. The very traits that made the organism successful in Epoch A — aggression, competition, short-term optimization, the relentless drive for more — become liabilities. What was adaptive becomes maladaptive. The species must develop new capacities or face collapse.

This is not a metaphor. Salk drew it directly from population biology, where the phenomenon is observed in every ecosystem, from bacteria in a petri dish to deer on an island without predators. The exponential phase cannot continue. The question is whether the transition is managed or catastrophic — whether the population stabilizes gracefully near carrying capacity or overshoots, depletes its resources, and crashes. The track record of exercising it, particularly at the species level, is poor. Salk was not naive about this. What Salk identified, decades before the neuroscientific research that would confirm it, was that the human brain was built for Epoch A. Its reward circuits, its threat-detection systems, its social instincts, its time horizons — all were calibrated for a world of immediate physical challenges, small-group competition, and short feedback loops. The brain that evolved to track prey across a savannah, to detect cheaters in a tribe of a hundred and fifty, to stockpile food for the coming winter, was now being asked to think about atmospheric carbon concentrations over centuries, to cooperate with billions of strangers it would never meet, to sacrifice present consumption for the benefit of future generations it would never see. The mismatch between the brain's evolved architecture and the demands of the current situation was, in Salk's view, the central challenge of the species.

The implications of this framework for artificial intelligence are profound, and they are not the implications that most contemporary commentators are drawing. The prevailing conversation about AI focuses on capability — what AI can do, what jobs it will replace, what new products it will enable, how much productivity it will unlock. This is an Epoch A conversation. It measures the value of a new tool by the metrics of expansion: more output, more efficiency, more growth. These metrics are not irrelevant, but they are incomplete in a way that Salk's framework makes visible.

Consider the most celebrated feature of modern AI systems: their ability to collapse the distance between intention and artifact. A person with an idea can now build a functional prototype in hours rather than months. A writer with a concept can produce a polished draft with unprecedented speed. A coder with an architectural vision can generate working software in a fraction of the time previously required. The imagination-to-artifact ratio, as some have called it, has collapsed to near zero. This is, by any Epoch A metric, extraordinary. It is a multiplication of capability that has no precedent in the history of the species.

Salk would have asked: capability for what?

This is not a rhetorical question. It is the diagnostic question that separates Epoch A thinking from Epoch B thinking. In Epoch A, more capability is always better, because the primary challenge is survival and the primary constraint is insufficient power. In Epoch B, more capability without more wisdom is dangerous, because the primary challenge is no longer survival but the wise management of power already accumulated. The species does not lack the ability to reshape its environment. It has been reshaping its environment with increasing violence and effectiveness for ten thousand years. What it lacks is the ability to reshape its environment in ways that serve long-term flourishing rather than short-term gain.

AI, in this framework, is the ultimate Epoch A achievement — and the ultimate Epoch B test. It is the apex of human capability, the tool that amplifies cognitive power the way nuclear energy amplified physical power and genetic engineering amplified biological power. And like those earlier amplifiers, its value depends entirely on the wisdom with which it is deployed. A species that uses AI to optimize for Epoch A metrics — more production, more consumption, more competition, more speed — will accelerate its trajectory toward the crash. A species that uses AI to develop Epoch B capacities — better modeling of complex systems, deeper understanding of long-term consequences, more effective cooperation across cultural and geographical boundaries, wiser management of shared resources — will find in AI the instrument of its survival.

The distinction is not abstract. It manifests in every design choice, every deployment decision, every business model, every educational curriculum that incorporates AI. When a company deploys AI to maximize engagement — to keep users scrolling, clicking, consuming, reacting — it is optimizing for Epoch A. When a researcher uses AI to model climate systems, predict pandemic trajectories, or design more equitable resource-distribution mechanisms, the tool is being directed toward Epoch B. When an individual uses AI to produce more content faster, without pausing to ask whether the content contributes to understanding or merely adds to the noise, that individual is operating in Epoch A mode regardless of how sophisticated the tool. When that same individual uses AI to deepen their thinking, test their assumptions, explore perspectives they would not have encountered alone, and produce work that helps others see more clearly, the amplifier is serving Epoch B.

Salk would have recognized immediately that the tool itself does not determine the epoch. The tool is neutral. The epoch is determined by the consciousness that wields the tool — by the values, the time horizons, the understanding of consequences that guide the hand on the lever. This is why Salk spent the second half of his life not building tools but trying to change consciousness. He understood that the crisis was not technological but psychological, not a crisis of what we can do but of who we are while doing it.

The S-curve has another feature that Salk found deeply significant: the inflection point itself is a zone of maximum instability. It is the moment when Epoch A pressures are at their most intense — the growth curve at its steepest, the demand for resources at its most acute, the competition at its fiercest — and Epoch B capacities are at their most urgently needed but their least developed. The species at the inflection point is being pulled in two directions simultaneously: backward into the familiar patterns of expansion and competition, and forward into the unfamiliar territory of cooperation and restraint. The tension is immense. The temptation to retreat into Epoch A is overwhelming, because Epoch A is known, its rewards are immediate, and its logic is encoded in the organism's deepest instincts.

The AI moment is the inflection point made visible. The technology itself embodies the tension. On one hand, AI represents the most powerful capability expansion in human history — the ultimate Epoch A achievement, the tool that can outcompete any single human mind at an increasing number of cognitive tasks. On the other hand, AI is the first tool that forces the species to confront, at scale, the question of what it means to be human — the first technology that does not merely extend human capability but mirrors it, simulates it, and in some domains surpasses it. The confrontation with that mirror is inherently an Epoch B moment, a moment of self-examination, a moment when the species must decide what it values in itself and why.

The discomfort that so many people feel about AI — the anxiety that runs beneath the excitement, the sense of ground shifting, the 3 a.m. unease — is, in Salk's framework, the felt experience of the inflection point. It is the organism sensing that the old rules are no longer sufficient but not yet knowing the new ones. It is the species at the bend of the S-curve, looking down at the exponential climb it has just made and up at the plateau it must somehow reach without crashing through it.

Salk did not believe the transition was guaranteed. He did not believe history had a direction, a teleology, a built-in tendency toward progress. He believed that the transition from Epoch A to Epoch B was a real possibility — the human species had the cognitive and moral capacity to make it — but that it required conscious effort, deliberate choice, and the willingness to develop capacities that evolution had not optimized for. It required, in his word, wisdom. Not intelligence, which the species had in abundance and which AI was now amplifying to extraordinary levels, but wisdom — the capacity to use intelligence in service of long-term flourishing, to see consequences across generations, to hold the interests of the whole alongside the interests of the self.

The distinction between intelligence and wisdom is, in Salk's framework, the distinction between Epoch A and Epoch B. Intelligence is the capacity to solve problems. Wisdom is the capacity to choose which problems to solve. Intelligence can build a nuclear weapon, decode a genome, design an artificial mind. Wisdom asks whether the weapon should be built, how the genome should be altered, and what the artificial mind should be asked to do. Intelligence is the amplifier. Wisdom is the signal.

If Salk is right — if the species is at the inflection point, if the choice between Epoch A and Epoch B is the defining choice of the present moment — then the AI conversation as currently conducted is missing its own center. The conversation about capability, about productivity, about competitive advantage, about which companies will dominate the AI landscape and which countries will fall behind, is an Epoch A conversation conducted in Epoch A language with Epoch A metrics. It is not wrong. It is incomplete. And its incompleteness is not merely an intellectual oversight. It is a symptom of the very problem Salk diagnosed: the species reaching for Epoch B tools with Epoch A hands.

The task is not to abandon the tools. It never was, and Salk — the man who spent years in a laboratory developing a vaccine — would be the last person to argue for technological retreat. The task is to develop the consciousness that can wield the tools wisely. And that development is, in the deepest sense, an evolutionary project. Not evolution in the genetic sense — there is not time for that — but evolution in the cultural, moral, and psychological sense. The development of capacities that the species possesses in potential but has not yet realized at scale. The transition from what we are to what we need to become. The inflection, the bend, the choice that the S-curve demands.

The curve is bending now. The question is which way.

Chapter 3: The Survival of the Wisest

In 1973, Jonas Salk published a slim book with an audacious title: The Survival of the Wisest. The title was a deliberate provocation — a rewriting of Herbert Spencer's famous phrase "survival of the fittest," which had been misapplied to Darwin's theory and then weaponized by social Darwinists to justify everything from laissez-faire capitalism to eugenics. Salk was not merely updating the phrase. He was inverting its logic. Spencer's formulation — and the entire intellectual tradition it spawned — assumed that the evolutionary game was about competition: the fittest organisms outcompete the weak, the strongest societies dominate the rest, the most ruthless individuals rise to the top. Salk argued that this was a description of Epoch A, accurate as far as it went but catastrophically incomplete. In a world where the tools of competition had become powerful enough to destroy the competitors, fitness was no longer measured by the capacity to dominate.
