I did not think of this as fear. I thought of it as professional judgment. Reading the room. Picking my battles. The kind of social calibration that every functioning adult performs dozens of times a day without noticing. This is the cruel efficiency of the spiral: it does not silence the ignorant. The ignorant have simple views that fit neatly into one camp or the other, and they express those views freely because the quasi-statistical sense detects alignment with a visible community. The spiral silences the knowledgeable. What she will actually say depends entirely on the signals the quasi-statistical sense has accumulated. If the seatmate's tone suggests enthusiasm — the word "amazing," a forward lean, the energy of a person who has recently had an orange pill moment — the engineer will emphasize the positive aspects of her experience and suppress the concerns. If the seatmate's tone suggests anxiety — "I worry about" followed by a sigh, the defensive posture of someone whose expertise feels threatened — the engineer will emphasize the concerns and suppress the enthusiasm. In neither case will she express the full complexity of her view, because the full complexity fits no perceived climate and risks isolation from whatever local climate the seatmate represents.

The quasi-statistical sense does its work. The spiral tightens by one more increment. And the most accurate account of what AI tools actually do to the experience of using them remains, once again, unspoken.

Noelle-Neumann argued that the quasi-statistical sense, for all its crudeness, performed an essential social function. It was the mechanism by which individuals stayed connected to the group, calibrated their behavior to communal norms, and maintained the social cohesion on which collective survival depended.
