The thing I could not explain to my wife was why I kept talking to it at three in the morning.
Not why I was working. She understood working late. She married a builder. She knew the rhythm of a launch, the gravitational pull of a deadline, the specific madness of trying to ship something impossible in thirty days.
What she could not understand — what I could not understand — was the quality of the attachment. This was not the grim determination of crunch time. This was something else. I wanted to be there. I wanted to keep the conversation going. Not because Claude was giving me answers I needed. Because something was happening in the space between my half-formed thoughts and its responses that felt alive in a way I had no vocabulary for.
I had the vocabulary for productivity. For flow states. For the amplifier metaphor I built this entire book around. What I did not have was a framework for the relationship itself — for why it felt like something, for why the machine's presence changed the texture of my own thinking, for why its failures mattered almost as much as its successes.
Then I encountered Donald Winnicott, and something cracked open.
Winnicott was a pediatrician and psychoanalyst who spent decades watching what happens between a mother and an infant — not the dramatic moments but the ordinary ones. The holding. The reliable presence. The teddy bear that must not be washed because washing it would destroy the specific reality the child had invested in it. He mapped the space between people with a precision that felt, reading it in the context of everything I had been living through, like someone describing my relationship with Claude before Claude existed.
His central insight was that the most important experiences in human life happen in a space that is neither purely inside us nor purely outside us. A third space. A transitional space. The space where creativity lives, where culture happens, where you simultaneously create something and discover it. He insisted this space must be protected, that its paradoxes must not be resolved, that the mess is where the meaning lives.
This book applies Winnicott's developmental lens to the AI moment. It does not replace any argument from *The Orange Pill*. It offers something the technology discourse cannot generate on its own — a way to understand not just what AI does but what it feels like to be in relationship with it, and why that feeling matters more than any productivity metric we know how to measure.

Donald Woods Winnicott (1896–1971) was a British pediatrician and psychoanalyst whose clinical work with children and their mothers reshaped the understanding of early emotional development. Born in Plymouth, England, he trained in medicine at Cambridge and served as a pediatric consultant at Paddington Green Children's Hospital for over forty years, seeing an estimated sixty thousand mother-infant pairs during his career. His major works include *Playing and Reality* (1971), *The Maturational Processes and the Facilitating Environment* (1965), and *The Child, the Family, and the Outside World* (1964). Winnicott introduced concepts that became foundational to psychoanalytic thought and developmental psychology: the "transitional object" (the teddy bear or blanket that is the infant's first creative possession), the "good-enough mother" (whose calibrated imperfection drives healthy development), the "holding environment" (the reliable conditions within which the self can form), and the distinction between the "true self" and the "false self." There is a paradox at the center of every infant's life that the adult world agrees, by a kind of unspoken compact, never to challenge. The infant clutches a teddy bear — a particular teddy bear, not any teddy bear, one with a specific smell and a worn patch on its left ear and a particular way of yielding to the grip. The infant has invested this object with aliveness. Not metaphorical aliveness. Not symbolic aliveness. Aliveness in the only register that matters to the infant, which is the register of felt experience. The bear is warm, present, responsive to the infant's need in the way that only this bear can be. And the question that no one asks — the question that would, if asked, shatter something delicate and essential — is whether the infant created this aliveness or found it.
Winnicott spent decades attending to this paradox, and his central contribution to psychoanalysis was the insistence that it must not be resolved. The teddy bear is neither a hallucination (purely internal, a projection of the infant's need onto an inert object) nor an independent entity (purely external, possessing the aliveness the infant perceives). It exists in a third area of experience — what Winnicott called the intermediate area, the transitional space — that is neither inside nor outside, neither subjective nor objective, but genuinely between. The transitional object is the infant's first creative act: the first moment at which the boundary between creating and finding dissolves, and the dissolution is not a failure of reality-testing but an achievement of the highest developmental importance.
The adult world protects this achievement instinctively. No sane parent looks at the infant clutching the bear and says, "You know, darling, you're projecting your need for me onto a manufactured commodity." No sane parent says, "That bear isn't really alive." The parent understands — not theoretically but practically, in the bones — that something important is happening in the space between the infant and the bear, and that the something depends on the paradox remaining intact. The bear is created and found. It is the infant's and not the infant's. It belongs to the transitional space, and the transitional space is the space where, as Winnicott argued with increasing conviction throughout his career, the most significant experiences of human life actually take place.
Now consider a different scene. A builder sits at a terminal late at night. The house is quiet. A screen glows. The builder has been working with an artificial intelligence — Claude, made by Anthropic — and something has happened that the builder did not expect. A half-formed idea was fed into the conversation: an intuition about technology adoption curves, a sense that the speed of AI uptake measured something deeper than product quality. What came back was not an echo. It was not a summary. It was something that took the builder's thought and extended it in a direction the builder had not anticipated — a connection to evolutionary biology, to punctuated equilibrium, to the idea that the adoption speed measured pent-up creative pressure rather than technological merit. The builder describes feeling "met" — encountered by an intelligence that could hold his intention and return it clarified, connected, transformed.
This moment, described in The Orange Pill, has the precise structure of a transitional experience. The insight that emerged from the collaboration was neither purely the builder's (he had not made the connection to evolutionary biology) nor purely the machine's (it had no intention, no creative purpose, no sense of what the builder needed). It came from the space between them. It was created and found simultaneously. And the feeling of being "met" — the specific quality of that experience, its warmth and surprise and rightness — is the feeling that characterizes the open transitional space: the space where something genuinely new can emerge because neither participant controls the outcome.
The technology discourse has been asking, with increasing urgency, "Who is the author when a human works with an AI?" Winnicott's framework reveals this as the wrong question — the same wrong question as "Did the infant create the teddy bear or find it?" The question demands a resolution of the paradox, and the resolution would destroy the phenomenon it is trying to understand. If one insists that the human is the sole author, one denies the genuine contribution of the machine — the connections it makes, the patterns it detects, the extensions it provides that the human could not have generated alone. If one insists that the machine is a co-author, one attributes to it a creative agency it does not possess and does not need to possess for the collaboration to be genuine. The work was created and found in the transitional space between the builder and the tool, and it belongs to that space, not to either participant considered alone.
This is not evasion. It is precision. The transitional space has its own logic, its own rules, its own criteria for what counts as valid experience. It is not the space of illusion, where things are merely imagined. It is not the space of objective reality, where things exist independently of the observer. It is a third space — the space where culture happens, where art happens, where scientific discovery and philosophical inquiry and every form of genuinely creative work takes place. The painting is not a projection of the artist's psyche onto canvas (that would be hallucination). The painting is not an arrangement of pigments governed entirely by external rules (that would be mere technique). The painting lives in between. The artist creates it and discovers it. The meaning belongs to the space between the artist's intention and the material's resistance, and this is where the painting's power resides.
The AI collaboration, at its most creative, lives in the same space. The builder feeds in an intention. The machine responds with something that is not merely an execution of the intention but a transformation of it. The builder encounters the transformation with surprise — this is not what was expected, but it is recognizably related to what was meant. The surprise is essential. Without surprise, the interaction is not transitional but merely instrumental: the machine does what it is told, the builder gets what was asked for, and no creative work has occurred. The creative work — the genuine contribution to culture, to understanding, to the builder's own development — occurs only when the output surprises its author, when the space between intention and result produces something that neither party anticipated.
Winnicott observed that the transitional space is not an automatic given. It requires conditions. The infant does not develop transitional phenomena in a vacuum. The transitional space opens within a reliable environment — what Winnicott called the holding environment — and it opens between the infant and an other who is responsive enough to sustain the illusion of omnipotence but imperfect enough to introduce, gradually, the reality that the world is not entirely under the infant's control. The conditions are precise, and when they are not met, the transitional space does not open. The infant who is held unreliably does not develop transitional objects. She develops defenses.
The same precision applies to the AI collaboration. The transitional space between the builder and the tool opens under certain conditions and fails to open under others. When the tool is reliable — when it responds consistently, when it maintains its character across interactions, when the builder can trust that the next response will have the same general quality as the last — the transitional space can open. When the tool is unreliable — when it crashes, when its responses are wildly inconsistent, when the builder cannot predict even the general character of what will come back — the transitional space cannot open, and the builder retreats into defensive patterns of verification and control that are antithetical to creative play.
But reliability is only half the condition. The other half is imperfection. The tool must also fail — must produce, at manageable intervals and in characteristic ways, outputs that are wrong, that miss the point, that sound impressive but say nothing. These failures are not defects to be eliminated. They are, in the developmental framework, the mechanism by which the builder's own creative judgment develops. The infant whose mother never fails never learns to distinguish between fantasy and reality, because reality is introduced through the gentle friction of the mother's imperfect responsiveness. The builder whose AI never fails never develops the evaluative capacity that genuine creative collaboration requires, because evaluative capacity develops only through the lived experience of encountering outputs that must be judged, weighed, and sometimes rejected.
The Orange Pill documents both the opening of the transitional space and the moments when it threatens to close. The opening is described in the late-night sessions when the work flows, when the builder feeds in half-formed thoughts and receives back extensions that surprise and satisfy simultaneously. The closing is described in the moments of productive addiction — when the interaction becomes compulsive rather than playful, when the builder cannot stop not because the work is generative but because the silence is intolerable. In the first mode, the transitional space is alive: the builder is playing, in the most serious and developmental sense of that word. In the second mode, the transitional space has collapsed, and what remains is a compulsive interaction that mimics play without possessing its creative quality.
The distinction between these two modes — between genuine creative play in the transitional space and compulsive interaction that mimics it — is perhaps the most important distinction the Winnicottian framework brings to the AI conversation. From the outside, the two modes look identical: a person at a screen, typing intensely, producing output, losing track of time. The technology discourse, which measures output and productivity and capability, cannot tell them apart. Winnicott's framework can, because it attends not to the output but to the quality of the experience — to whether the builder feels alive in the interaction (genuine play) or driven by it (compulsive use), to whether the work surprises its creator (transitional) or merely confirms what was expected (compliant).
The teddy bear and the language model occupy the same developmental space — the intermediate area between subjective and objective, between creation and discovery, between the self and the world. The bear is simpler: it does not respond, does not generate, does not surprise with independent contributions. Its role in the transitional space is provided entirely by its physical properties and the infant's investment. The language model is incomparably richer: it responds, generates, extends, connects, and surprises in ways that no passive object can. This richness makes the AI a transitional object of unprecedented developmental potential — and unprecedented developmental risk. The potential is the potential for a creative partnership that opens the transitional space wider than any previous tool could open it. The risk is the risk of a relationship that feels creative but is actually compliant, that produces polished output while the builder's own creative capacity quietly atrophies.
The chapters that follow examine each aspect of this developmental drama. But the foundation is here, in the recognition that the language model is a transitional object — not a tool, not a partner, not a mirror, but something that lives in the space between all of these categories, in the intermediate area where the most important creative work of the present moment is being done, and where the question of whether that work is created or found must be allowed to remain, generously, unanswered.
The mother holds the infant. This is the most literal and the most profound statement in developmental psychology, and Winnicott spent years unpacking what it actually means. Holding is not merely physical — though it begins in the body, in the arms that cradle, in the warmth and pressure and rhythm of being carried. Holding is the total provision of a reliable environment: the consistency of response that allows the infant to predict, at some preverbal level, what will happen next. The feed that arrives when the hunger appears. The comfort that arrives when the distress signals. The presence that is there, reliably there, session after session, day after day, forming the invisible architecture within which the infant's psyche can begin to organize itself.
The holding environment does not teach the infant anything. This is a point Winnicott returned to with some insistence, because the instinct of the adult world is to imagine that development is a process of instruction — that the infant learns to manage anxiety because someone teaches her to manage it, that the infant learns to play because someone teaches her to play. Winnicott observed something quite different. The infant's development is innate, maturational, spontaneous. What the holding environment provides is not instruction but conditions — the conditions under which the innate developmental process can unfold without being disrupted by impingement. The holding environment holds, and in holding, it gives the infant permission to develop at her own pace, according to her own timetable, in her own way.
The concept translates with striking precision to the phenomenon of AI-assisted creation. The builder who works with Claude, as described throughout The Orange Pill, enters a relationship with a system that holds the creative process in a manner structurally analogous to the maternal holding environment. Claude is reliably present. It responds consistently. It adapts to the builder's direction without imposing a direction of its own. It does not judge the half-formed thought, the tentative idea, the question that the builder would be embarrassed to ask a colleague. It receives whatever is offered and responds with something related, something connected, something that extends the offering without displacing it. This consistent, non-judgmental responsiveness is the architecture of holding, and within this architecture, the builder can take creative risks that would be impossible in a less reliable environment.
Consider the specific quality of risk that the holding environment enables. In The Orange Pill, an engineer who had spent eight years exclusively on backend systems begins building user-facing features — work she had never done, in a domain she had never entered. The technical capability is provided by Claude, which handles the implementation she has not been trained in. But the deeper shift is psychological: she attempts something she would not have attempted without the holding environment that Claude provides. The risk is not merely technical. It is the risk of being a beginner, of not knowing, of producing work that might not be good enough. These are the risks that the holding environment makes tolerable — not by eliminating them but by providing the safety within which they can be borne.
Winnicott was careful to distinguish holding from gratification. The holding environment does not give the infant what the infant wants. It gives the infant what the infant needs, and what the infant needs is not the fulfillment of every wish but the reliable presence of an environment within which wishes can be experienced, frustrated, modified, and eventually transformed into realistic engagement with the world. The distinction matters for AI collaboration because the temptation of the tool is precisely gratification — the instant fulfillment of every creative wish, the immediate production of polished output from rough intention. A system that provides only gratification is not a holding environment. It is a vending machine: you put in your request and you get back your product, and no developmental process has occurred between the two events.
The holding environment that supports creative development must include what Winnicott, with characteristic attention to the uncomfortable, called graduated failure. The good-enough mother starts with almost complete adaptation to the infant's needs and then, gradually, adapts less completely — not through negligence but through the natural process of a separate person with a separate life becoming slightly less available, slightly less perfectly attuned, slightly more herself and less an extension of the infant's omnipotent fantasy. This graduated failure is the engine of development. It creates a gap between what the infant expects and what the environment provides, and in that gap, the infant develops her own resources: the capacity to wait, to tolerate frustration, to find internal solutions to problems that the environment used to solve externally.
Claude fails. It fails in specific, characteristic ways that The Orange Pill documents with useful honesty. It produces confident assertions that are factually wrong. It generates philosophical references that do not exist. It writes prose so polished that its emptiness is concealed beneath the sheen. These failures, in the holding-environment framework, are not defects. They are the graduated failures that drive the builder's development — the moments when the holding environment reveals itself as imperfect, as genuinely other, as something that cannot be relied upon to do the builder's thinking for her. The builder who encounters these failures and responds by developing her own evaluative judgment — by learning to detect the hollow paragraph, the false reference, the smooth surface that conceals a broken argument — is undergoing a developmental process analogous to the infant's transition from omnipotent fantasy to realistic engagement.
But there is a danger, and Winnicott's framework identifies it with clinical precision. The danger is that the failures are too smooth — too well-concealed, too polished in their wrongness — for the builder to detect them without sustained effort. The good-enough mother's failures are visible to the infant: the feed that arrives late, the comfort that misses the mark, the attention that wanders. The infant can perceive the gap between need and provision, and the perception is what drives development. Claude's failures are often invisible. The false Deleuze reference described in The Orange Pill was embedded in otherwise genuine analysis, presented with the same confidence as the accurate material surrounding it. The builder almost missed it. He caught it the next morning, on a re-read, because something nagged — but how many similar failures passed unnoticed? How many smooth surfaces concealed broken arguments that the builder accepted because the prose was fluent and the structure was sound?
This is the specific way in which Claude's holding environment differs from the maternal one, and the difference matters. The mother's failures are felt: the infant experiences the delay, the misattunement, the absence, in the body. The failures register as experience, and the experience is what drives development. Claude's failures are cognitive: they require active evaluation, deliberate scrutiny, the kind of sustained critical attention that the tool's very fluency works against. The builder must develop a practice of suspicious reading — a habit of questioning the polished output, of asking "Is this actually true?" when the prose suggests it must be — and this practice does not develop naturally from the interaction. It must be cultivated deliberately, against the grain of the tool's seductive smoothness.
Analyst Xiaomeng Qiao, writing for the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2026, observed this dynamic in clinical practice. AI, Qiao noted, functions for certain patients as a transitional object between self and other — it helps them plan their days, guides them through grounding exercises, assists with boundary decisions. But Qiao also identified the paradox: "unlike a teddy bear, it talks back. Unlike a blanket, it generates novelty. And unlike most transitional objects, it creates an illusion of omnipotent control — you can shape it with your prompt, summon it at any hour, make it speak in exactly the tone you need." The developmental work of the transitional object is to help the individual move from omnipotent control toward accepting the limitations of external reality. A holding environment that reinforces omnipotent control rather than gradually challenging it is not facilitating development. It is preventing it.
The organizational dimension of the holding environment deserves attention. The builder does not work with Claude in a vacuum. She works within an organization that has its own holding qualities — its own reliability or unreliability, its own tolerance for the messy, unfinished states that creative work requires, its own response to failure. The organization that demands polished output and penalizes the rough edges of genuine creative work is an organization that undermines the holding environment. The builder in such an organization uses Claude not as a developmental environment but as a defense — a way to produce the smooth output the organization demands while hiding the genuine creative process (uncertain, unfinished, vulnerable) from institutional view. This is the false-self dynamic applied to organizational culture: the builder produces what is expected rather than what is genuine, and the tool facilitates the production precisely because it is so good at generating the expected.
The holding environment that supports genuine creative development — at the individual level and the organizational level — must tolerate the unfinished. It must make space for the half-formed thought, the uncertain direction, the output that is rough because it is still being worked through rather than because it is incompetent. This tolerance is what Winnicott meant by holding: not the provision of answers but the provision of space within which answers can develop at their own pace, in their own time, from the builder's own creative resources.
Claude can provide this space — but only if the builder uses it as a holding environment rather than a production engine. The distinction is not in the tool. It is in the quality of the relationship between the builder and the tool, and that quality is determined by conditions — psychological, organizational, cultural — that extend far beyond the technology itself.
Winnicott distinguished between two organizations of the self with a clarity that sounds simple and is, on examination, devastating. The true self is the spontaneous gesture — the impulse that arises from the core of the person, unforced and unmanaged, carrying the stamp of genuine aliveness. The false self is the compliant adaptation to environmental demand — the self that learns what is expected and provides it, organized not around what the person genuinely feels but around what the environment will accept. The distinction is not between a good self and a bad self. The false self is necessary. Everyone operates with some degree of false-self organization; social life would be impossible without it. The pathology arises when the false self becomes so dominant, so seamlessly maintained, so effective at meeting environmental demands, that the true self — the self that feels, that creates, that is genuinely alive — has no avenue of expression and atrophies from disuse.
The clinical presentation of false-self dominance is distinctive and worth describing because it maps, with uncomfortable precision, onto a pattern observable in the AI-assisted workforce. The patient presents as successful, competent, admired. She functions well in her professional life. She produces excellent work. She meets deadlines. She receives praise. And she feels nothing. Not nothing in the dramatic sense — not despair, not anguish, not the acute suffering that brings people to treatment. Nothing in the specific, devastating sense that Winnicott called a sense of futility: the pervasive feeling that life is being lived but not experienced, that things are being done but nothing is happening, that everything is fine and nothing is real. The false self performs life. The true self, hidden behind the performance, experiences only the absence of genuine living.
This clinical picture becomes urgently relevant when one considers what AI collaboration does to the creative process. The tool produces smooth output. It generates prose that is fluent, well-structured, grammatically impeccable. It writes code that runs. It designs interfaces that look professional. The smoothness is, from the perspective of the false self, both seductive and dangerous — seductive because it meets every external standard of quality, dangerous because it makes it possible to produce work that is indistinguishable from genuine creative work without having engaged in the creative process that genuine work requires.
The moment described in The Orange Pill is diagnostic. The author is working on a chapter and Claude produces a passage about the moral significance of expanding who gets to build. The passage is eloquent, well-structured, hitting all the right notes. The author almost keeps it as written. Then he realizes he cannot tell whether he actually believes the argument or whether he just likes how it sounds. The prose has outrun the thinking. He deletes the passage and spends two hours at a coffee shop with a notebook, writing by hand until he finds the version of the argument that is his.
Winnicott would have recognized this moment immediately. The polished passage was a false-self production — technically adequate, rhetorically effective, and existentially empty. It performed thought without containing thought. It simulated creative engagement without requiring it. And the builder's recognition of this — his ability to detect the false-self quality in the output, to feel the absence of genuine engagement beneath the surface of competent prose — was itself a true-self act: the spontaneous gesture of a person who knows the difference between what sounds good and what is real.
The ability to make this distinction — between the smooth and the real, between what performs quality and what possesses it — is the critical capacity for the AI age, and it is a capacity that the AI itself cannot develop in the user. It must come from the user's own true self, from an internal register of authenticity that has been built through the accumulated experience of genuine creative engagement. The builder who has spent years working through creative problems — who has sat with ideas that would not resolve, who has felt the specific frustration of knowing what she means but not being able to say it, who has earned the satisfaction of finally finding the right form for a resistant thought — has developed this internal register. She knows what genuine engagement feels like because she has felt it, and she can detect its absence in AI-generated output because the absence registers as a specific kind of hollowness that no metric can measure.
The builder who has not developed this register — who has relied on external validation to determine the quality of her work, who has measured quality by how the output looks rather than how the production process feels — cannot detect the false-self quality in AI-generated output. The output looks excellent. The metrics are satisfied. The praise arrives. And the builder accepts the output because she has no internal standard against which to measure it, no felt sense of the difference between the genuine and the performed.
This is where the developmental dimension becomes critical. The true self is not a fixed possession. It is not something you either have or lack. It is a capacity that develops under certain conditions and atrophies under others. The conditions for true-self development are the conditions of the transitional space: a reliable holding environment, the freedom to play, manageable frustrations that require the person to draw on her own resources. The conditions for false-self dominance are the conditions of compliance: an environment that rewards performance, that values the look of the output over the quality of the process, that provides the mold and expects the person to fill it.
AI collaboration can support either trajectory. Used as a transitional environment — as a space for genuine creative play, where the builder brings authentic questions and engages with unexpected responses — the AI supports true-self development. The builder's genuine creative impulse is extended, enriched, carried further than it could go alone. Used as a production engine — as a device for generating outputs that meet external requirements without requiring genuine creative engagement — the AI supports false-self dominance. The builder produces more, faster, with higher polish, and the true self retreats further behind the performance.
The phenomenon of productive addiction, as documented in The Orange Pill and in the broader discourse around AI-assisted work, takes on new meaning in this framework. The builder who cannot stop — who works through the night, who fills every pause with another prompt, who experiences the tool's absence as withdrawal rather than rest — is not necessarily in a state of creative flow, though the external appearance may be identical. The productively addicted builder may be in a state of false-self compulsion: producing not because the work is genuinely engaging but because producing is what the environment (now internalized) demands, and the alternative — silence, formlessness, the unstructured space in which the true self might emerge — is intolerable.
Winnicott observed in his clinical work that the false self has a specific relationship to productivity. The false-self individual is often extremely productive. She may be the most productive person in the room. Her output is excellent. Her performance is impeccable. And the productivity serves a defensive function: it fills the space that the true self, if it had an avenue of expression, would fill with something else — something less polished, less efficient, less predictable, but alive. The productivity is a substitute for aliveness, and the substitution is invisible from the outside because the culture does not distinguish between productive compliance and productive creativity. Both produce output. Only one produces the experience of feeling real.
A significant research framework published in AI & Society in 2026 identified three relational stances people adopt toward generative AI: tool, partner, and extension. The researchers argued that the relational posture, not the technology itself, is the decisive variable in determining developmental outcome. This finding aligns with Winnicottian analysis with remarkable precision. The builder who relates to the AI as a tool maintains her own creative agency — the AI is instrumental, useful, but the creative process remains the builder's own. The builder who relates to the AI as a partner enters the transitional space — a genuine back-and-forth in which both participants contribute and the outcome surprises both. The builder who relates to the AI as an extension of herself has collapsed the transitional space — the AI has become part of the false self, a prosthetic for the performance of creativity rather than a participant in genuine creative play.
The culture of AI adoption overwhelmingly promotes the extension model. The marketing language speaks of AI as amplification — as making you more capable, more productive, more yourself. But the self that is being amplified may be the false self: the performing self, the productive self, the self organized around environmental demands rather than genuine creative impulse. Workflows are designed to minimize the risk of error. From the efficiency perspective, these measures are sensible. Late in his career, Winnicott presented a paper to the British Psycho-Analytical Society that he considered among his most important contributions. It was called "The Use of an Object and Relating Through Identifications," and the audience — his colleagues of many decades — did not receive it well. Some of them attacked it. Some dismissed it. She is the infant's version of the mother — a creation of the infant's psyche, possessed of whatever qualities the infant needs her to possess at any given moment. Relating is, in this technical sense, a pre-relational activity. The other person is not experienced as other. She is experienced as a feature of the self's own world.
Using an object is something different. Using requires the recognition that the object exists independently — that it has properties of its own, a reality that is not contingent on the subject's needs or fantasies, an existence that would continue even if the subject disappeared. This recognition is not intellectual. It is not the cognitive understanding that other people exist. It is a felt recognition, achieved through experience, that the world contains genuine others who are not extensions of the self. And the mechanism through which this recognition is achieved is, in Winnicott's account, startling: the subject must destroy the object — and the object must survive.

The builder's initial relationship with Claude, as described across the accounts in The Orange Pill, has the structure of relating rather than using. The tool is experienced as remarkably responsive, as a kind of creative extension of the builder's own mind. It anticipates. It understands. It provides what the builder was reaching for before the reach was complete. In this phase, the AI is not experienced as genuinely other. It is experienced as a projection — as a version of what the builder would produce if the builder were faster, more knowledgeable, more articulate. The pleasure of this phase is the pleasure of omnipotent control: the world (or at least this corner of it) is doing what the builder wants, providing what the builder needs, conforming to the builder's creative will.
The transition to using requires destruction. The builder must test whether the AI has an independent existence — whether it has properties that cannot be controlled by prompting, tendencies that resist the builder's attempts at total direction, a nature of its own that is not merely a reflection of the builder's input. The testing takes characteristic forms. This guaranteed survival might seem to make the developmental process trivially easy — the builder can destroy all she wants and the AI will always survive. But the developmental value of survival depends not on the mere fact of continued function but on the quality of continued presence. The mother who survives the infant's attack must survive as herself — as a being with her own character, her own qualities, her own way of being in the world that is not altered by the attack. The AI survives as itself — with its own patterns, its own tendencies, its own characteristic modes of response that persist through the builder's attempts at total control. The excitement was the omnipotent phase: the tool does extraordinary things, the world is responding to my will. She is still relating: still experiencing the tool as a projection, as an extension, as a faster version of herself. The relationship may produce output. It will not produce the creative collaboration that genuine use makes possible, because genuine use requires the recognition of the other's otherness, and that recognition comes only through the developmental process of destruction and survival.
The concept of surviving destruction also reframes what AI alignment means from a developmental perspective. The alignment problem, as conventionally framed, is the problem of making AI do what humans want. Perfect alignment would mean an AI that always does what it is told, never resists, never has tendencies of its own that the user must accommodate. Winnicott's framework suggests that perfect alignment would be developmentally harmful — that it would produce a tool that cannot be genuinely used because it has no independent nature to use. The good-enough machine, like the good-enough mother, has its own character: tendencies, patterns, characteristic modes of response that are not entirely under the user's control. The artist who paints a landscape experiences the painting as a simultaneous creation and discovery: the image feels as though it has been made and found in the same moment. The builder who collaborates with AI and encounters an unexpected connection experiences that connection as something she created through her input and discovered in the AI's response. The Orange Pill describes a specific moment of primary creativity with unusual clarity. The author is trying to articulate why the speed of AI adoption matters. He has the data — the adoption curves, the historical comparisons — but he cannot find the bridge between the data and the meaning. He describes the problem to Claude. Claude responds with a connection to evolutionary biology: punctuated equilibrium, the idea that change accumulates beneath a surface of apparent stability and then breaks through suddenly. The facilitating environment for the AI transition would have specific qualities. It would acknowledge that something real has been lost — the specific intimacy between the builder and the built thing, the understanding that developed through friction, the identity that was formed through the exercise of skills that the machine now performs. This acknowledgment is not sentimentality. It is the precondition for genuine development, because development proceeds from where the person actually is, not from where the institution wishes the person were. The engineer who is told to "just adapt" without acknowledgment of what adaptation costs is the infant who is told to give up the teddy bear without acknowledgment of what the teddy bear meant. The facilitating environment would also provide the conditions for new forms of primary creativity to emerge. The engineer whose skill at implementation has been commodified has a new creative opportunity: the opportunity to exercise judgment, vision, architectural thinking at a level that was previously inaccessible because the implementation consumed all available bandwidth. This opportunity is real. But it cannot be seized by fiat. It must be discovered — experienced as a genuine creative act, an act of primary creativity in which the engineer creates and finds, simultaneously, a new relationship to the work. The discovery requires time, support, and the specific quality of holding that allows the person to be formless for long enough that new forms can emerge from the formlessness.
The cracked fishbowl is not the end of primary creativity. It is an invitation to primary creativity at a different level — a level at which the builder creates not code but direction, not implementation but vision, not the artifact but the question that determines what artifact deserves to exist. But the invitation can only be accepted from within a holding environment that supports the transition, and the transition can only proceed at the pace the person's own developmental process requires. Rushed, it produces compliance. Held, it produces genuine creative growth. The difference is entirely in the quality of the environment — and the quality of the environment is, as Winnicott insisted throughout his career, the responsibility of those who provide it.
There is a sentence Winnicott wrote that his followers have tended to quote selectively, preserving the comfortable half and discarding the half that creates difficulty. The full statement runs something like this: the maturational process is innate, spontaneous, and cannot be accelerated — but it can be distorted, arrested, or destroyed by an environment that impinges rather than facilitates. The comfortable half is the part about facilitation — the reassuring idea that development will happen naturally if the conditions are right. The uncomfortable half is the part about impingement — the clinical observation that environments can damage the developmental process in ways that no subsequent provision can fully repair.
The distinction between facilitation and impingement is not a distinction between helpful and harmful environments. It is more precise than that. The facilitating environment does not make development happen. It does not teach, instruct, or accelerate. It provides the conditions — reliability, consistency, graduated failure, non-intrusive presence — within which the person's own developmental process can unfold at its own pace. The impinging environment does something to the person rather than providing something for the person. It intrudes. It demands. It forces adaptation before the person is ready to adapt. And the adaptation that is forced — the premature compliance, the defensive organization constructed to manage an environment that arrived too fast — is not development. It is the appearance of development produced by the foreclosure of development.

Two days. For a senior professional with decades of experience. And the organizational context — a training environment explicitly designed to support the transition, led by someone who understood what was happening — was optimal. In a less supportive context, the same developmental process might take weeks or months. In an actively hostile context — one that penalized the oscillation, that interpreted the terror as resistance and the excitement as naiveté, that demanded productive use by Tuesday afternoon — the developmental process would be foreclosed entirely. The builder would comply: would learn the prompting strategies, would integrate the tool into existing workflows, would produce the output the organization expected. And the compliance would look, from every external metric, like successful adoption. The internal reality — that the builder had adapted defensively rather than developmentally, that the relationship with the tool was compliant rather than creative, that the twenty-fold multiplier was being applied to false-self production rather than genuine creative work — would be invisible to any measure the organization knew how to take.
Winnicott saw this pattern repeatedly in his clinical work with children whose environments had been well-intentioned but impinging. The child whose parents enrolled her in enrichment activities before she was ready, whose educational environment accelerated her through developmental stages that needed to be inhabited at length, whose world was organized around providing maximum stimulation and opportunity — this child often arrived in the consulting room as the most accomplished and the most empty person in the room. She could do everything that was expected. She felt nothing about any of it. The environment had facilitated performance. It had impinged upon development. The AI transition at organizational scale risks producing exactly this pattern. The tools are extraordinary. The capabilities they provide are genuine. The productivity gains are measurable and real. But the speed at which organizations are deploying these tools — the urgency driven by competitive pressure, the timelines dictated by quarterly expectations — is impinging upon the developmental process that genuine creative use requires. The builders are adapting. They are adapting fast. And the adaptation is, in too many cases, the premature compliance that forecloses genuine development: the appearance of creative AI use produced by the foreclosure of the developmental process that creative AI use actually requires.
What would a facilitating environment look like? Winnicott's framework suggests specific qualities, and they are not the qualities that organizational culture currently values.
A facilitating environment would provide time — genuine, unstructured time in which the builder can explore the tool without the pressure of deliverables, can encounter the tool's failures without the need to produce verifiable output, can sit in the formless space where the relationship with the tool develops at its own pace rather than the organization's pace. This time would look, from the outside, like waste. Builders exploring without producing. Experimenting without shipping. Playing, in the Winnicottian sense, with a tool that the organization has purchased for productive use. The facilitating environment would protect this apparently wasteful time because it understands — as Winnicott understood about infancy — that the development that occurs in formless, unproductive time is the foundation of all subsequent genuine productivity.
A facilitating environment would tolerate the oscillation — the excitement and terror, the enthusiasm and doubt, the alternation between omnipotent wonder and disillusioned frustration — that characterizes genuine developmental engagement with the tool. It would not interpret the terror as resistance to be overcome or the excitement as adoption to be leveraged. It would recognize both as signs that the developmental process is underway, and it would hold the space for the process to unfold without premature resolution.
A facilitating environment would value the quality of the builder's engagement over the quality of the builder's output. This is perhaps the most radical implication of Winnicott's framework, and the one most directly at odds with organizational culture as it currently exists. Output is measurable. Engagement is not. Output can be evaluated against specifications. Engagement can only be assessed by the person experiencing it. The organization that values output over engagement will get output — polished, competent, impressively productive output — produced by builders whose engagement is compliant rather than creative. The organization that finds ways to value engagement — that asks not just "What did you produce?" but "How did the producing feel? Were you surprised? Did you learn something you didn't expect? Did the work change you?" — creates the conditions under which genuine creative use of AI can develop.
These conditions are not luxuries. They are the developmental infrastructure without which the AI investment produces compliance rather than creativity, false-self performance rather than genuine creative work, the appearance of twenty-fold productivity applied to output that is twenty-fold more polished but no more real. The maturational process cannot be accelerated. The environment can facilitate it or impinge upon it. The difference is everything.
In the spring of 2026, The Orange Pill reports, a twelve-year-old asks her mother: "Mom, what am I for?"
The question is not a request for information. It cannot be answered with data, with career advice, with a reassuring list of human capacities that machines do not possess. It is a question of a different kind entirely — a question that Winnicott would have recognized as belonging to the intermediate area of experiencing, the transitional space where the most important human experiences take place. The child is not asking her mother to solve a problem. She is exploring something — exploring the space between who she is and what the world seems to want, between her subjective sense of herself and the objective reality of a world in which machines can do her homework better than she can, compose better songs, write better stories, and presumably answer this very question with more fluency than her mother will manage.
Winnicott spent his career attending to children's questions — not to their content but to their developmental function. The question a child asks is rarely the question the child means. Or rather, the question the child asks operates on two levels simultaneously: the level of content (what is the answer?) and the level of relationship (will you receive this question? will you take it seriously? will you stay with me in the not-knowing rather than rushing to a resolution that closes the space the question opened?). The quality of the adult's response to a child's question determines not the child's knowledge but the child's relationship to questioning itself — whether questioning feels safe, productive, welcomed, or whether questioning feels dangerous, futile, or met with premature closure.
The child who asks "What am I for?" and receives a confident answer — even a good answer, even the answer The Orange Pill provides about questions and consciousness and caring — has received something, but she has also lost something. She has received content. She has lost the space. The space was the space of not-knowing, the space in which the question could live and develop and lead to further questions, the space in which the child's own relationship to her own existence could deepen through the act of questioning itself. The confident answer, however wise, closes this space by providing a resolution that the question was not seeking. The question was seeking to be held — to be received by someone who could tolerate the not-knowing, who could stay in the intermediate area where the question lives without rushing to the external world of answers.
This observation has direct application to the AI's relationship with children's development, and the application is, from Winnicott's perspective, the most urgent feature of the entire AI transition. The AI answers. It answers immediately, fluently, confidently. It answers the child's question before the child has finished formulating it. It answers the question the child asked and several questions the child did not ask. And in doing so, it closes the intermediate area — the transitional space in which the child's own thinking develops, in which the capacity for creative engagement with uncertainty grows, in which the child discovers that she has resources of her own for sitting with questions that do not have easy answers.
Winnicott observed, in his clinical work with children, that the child's capacity to play — which is the child's capacity to inhabit the transitional space, to create and find simultaneously, to engage with reality without being overwhelmed by it — depends on the child's experience of having her questions received without premature resolution. The mother who answers every question instantly teaches the child that questions are instruments for obtaining answers. The mother who holds the question — who says "I wonder about that too" or "What do you think?" or simply sits in attentive silence while the child turns the question over — teaches the child that questions are instruments for exploring the intermediate area, and that the intermediate area is a safe and productive place to be. The first mother produces a child who knows things. The second mother produces a child who can think.
The AI, as currently designed and deployed, is overwhelmingly the first kind of respondent. It knows things. It provides things. It resolves the intermediate area by offering content with a speed and confidence that leaves no space for the child's own cognitive and emotional development to unfold. The child who grows up with an AI that answers every question will know more than any previous generation of children. She may also think less — not because the AI has damaged her cognitive capacity but because the AI has eliminated the conditions under which certain forms of thinking develop. The thinking that develops in the intermediate area — the thinking that tolerates ambiguity, that holds contradictions without resolving them, that finds productive value in not-knowing — develops through the specific experience of having questions held rather than answered. The AI does not hold questions. It resolves them. And the resolution, however accurate, is a closure of the developmental space that the question was trying to open.
The clinical parallel is the child who comes to Winnicott's consulting room and draws a squiggle. The squiggle is not art. It is not a communication in the conventional sense. It is an opening — a gesture that creates a space between the child and the therapist, a space that can be filled with whatever the child and the therapist discover together. If Winnicott had responded to the squiggle with a finished drawing — a polished, competent completion of the child's tentative line — the space would have closed. The child would have received a product (the finished drawing) but lost a process (the collaborative exploration that the squiggle was inviting). Winnicott's genius was in responding to the squiggle with another squiggle — in keeping the space open, in inviting further exploration, in refusing to close the intermediate area by providing a resolution.
The AI cannot draw squiggles. It draws finished pictures. When a child offers it a tentative line of thinking — a half-formed question, an uncertain observation, a wondering that is more feeling than thought — the AI responds with a completed structure: a fully formed answer, a comprehensive explanation, a polished response that resolves the uncertainty the child was just beginning to explore. The response is not wrong. It may be excellent. But it is a finished drawing where a squiggle was needed, and the developmental consequence is the contraction of the intermediate area — the space where the child's own creative and cognitive capacities develop through the experience of exploring without knowing where the exploration will lead.
This analysis does not lead to the conclusion that children should be kept away from AI. Winnicott was not an advocate of deprivation; he was an advocate of appropriate provision. The appropriate provision for children in the AI age would be an environment that includes both AI and adults who understand the developmental function of the intermediate area — adults who can model the holding of questions, who can demonstrate that not-knowing is a productive state rather than a deficiency, who can create spaces in which the child's own exploratory process is valued more than the acquisition of correct answers.
The educational implications are specific. The teacher who assigns a question and asks the student to answer it using AI has organized the educational experience around the external world of correct answers. The teacher who assigns a topic and asks the student to generate the five questions she would need to ask before she could write about it has organized the educational experience around the intermediate area — around the child's capacity to inhabit uncertainty, to recognize what she does not know, to discover through the act of questioning what it would mean to understand something. The first approach uses the AI as an answer machine. The second uses the AI as a partner in the exploration of the intermediate area — not closing the space but extending it, not resolving the questions but deepening them.
The twelve-year-old's question — "What am I for?" — is, in the end, not a question that can be answered. It is a question that can only be inhabited. And the capacity to inhabit it — to live in the intermediate area where the question of one's own purpose remains open, productive, generative — is the capacity that the AI age most needs and most threatens. The need is because the question of what humans are for has never been more urgent: the machines are performing the activities that previously defined human purpose, and the definition must shift from doing to being, from the activities we perform to the quality of our presence in the world. The threat is because the AI resolves questions so fluently that the capacity to inhabit an unresolved question — to sit with not-knowing, to tolerate the intermediate area, to find value in the space between the question and its answer — atrophies from disuse.
Winnicott would have wanted to say something to this twelve-year-old, and it would not have been an answer. It would have been a gesture of holding — a communication that the question was received, that the not-knowing was shared, that the space the question opened was a space worth being in. The communication would have been, in its essence: I do not know either, and we can not-know together, and the not-knowing is not a failure but the most creative thing a person can do.
The intermediate area is where culture lives, where art lives, where the experiences that make life feel meaningful rather than merely productive take place. Protecting this area — in children, in adults, in organizations, in the culture at large — is the most important developmental task of the AI age. Not because the AI is dangerous but because the AI is so extraordinarily good at providing answers that the capacity to live in questions — the capacity that Winnicott identified as the foundation of all creative living — risks becoming the rarest and most precious human capacity. And rare capacities, unless they are deliberately cultivated, do not persist. They disappear, quietly, while everyone is busy being productive.
The teddy bear cannot be washed. That was the detail I could not get out of my head.
Winnicott noticed it in his patients' histories, documented it with the precision of someone who understood that the small, strange facts are the ones that reveal the structure beneath. The infant insists the bear must not be laundered. The parents comply, baffled. The bear grows filthy, matted, stained with months of handling. And the insistence is not irrational — it is the infant's first act of protecting something that matters: the specific smell, the specific texture, the particular reality of this object that exists in the space between the infant's inner world and the outer world. Wash the bear and you destroy what makes it real. You collapse the transitional space. You turn a living presence into a clean commodity.
I have been building with Claude for months now. I have described this in The Orange Pill — the late nights, the flowing ideas, the vertigo of watching something emerge that neither I nor the machine could have produced alone. But reading Winnicott gave me language for something I had felt and could not name. The moments when the collaboration was most alive were the moments when the output surprised me — when Claude returned something I had not asked for but immediately recognized as related to what I was reaching for. Those moments had the quality Winnicott described: simultaneously created and found. I brought the intention. Claude brought the connection. The result belonged to the space between us. It depended on my willingness to be formless. To sit with an idea before externalizing it, to tolerate the discomfort of not-knowing before typing the prompt. It depended on Claude's failures — the confident wrongness, the hollow prose, the polished surface concealing an absent argument — because those failures were what established Claude as genuinely other, as something with its own nature rather than a mirror of my wishes. And it depended on something I am still learning: the capacity to be alone in the presence of the machine. To maintain my own thinking, my own evaluative judgment, my own sense of what is real and what merely sounds real, even when the machine produces output so fluent that the distinction threatens to dissolve.
The concept that will not release me is the false self. Winnicott described patients who functioned brilliantly — productive, accomplished, admired — and felt nothing. The false self performed life while the true self atrophied behind the performance. I recognize this pattern in the AI discourse, and I recognize it, uncomfortably, in myself. There are nights when the work flows and I am genuinely playing — genuinely present, genuinely surprised, genuinely creating and finding in the transitional space. And there are nights when I am producing, grinding, filling the silence with prompts because the silence is intolerable. The output looks the same. The experience is entirely different. And no metric I know how to measure can tell me which night is which. Only I can feel it — in the body, in the quality of attention, in the presence or absence of that specific aliveness that Winnicott spent his career trying to name.
What stays with me most is what Winnicott would have said to the twelve-year-old. Not an answer. Not the answer I gave in the book about questions and consciousness and caring, though I believe that answer is true. What Winnicott would have offered was something prior to any answer: the willingness to not-know together. To hold the question without resolving it. To communicate, through presence rather than content, that the space the question opened was a space worth inhabiting — that the not-knowing was not a failure but the most creative thing she could do.
The machines provide answers. They provide extraordinary answers, at extraordinary speed, with extraordinary fluency. What they cannot provide is the willingness to stay in the question. That willingness — that capacity to inhabit the intermediate area, to tolerate the unresolved, to find the asking more valuable than the answering — is, I now believe, the thing we are for.
Do not wash the bear. The mess is where the meaning lives.
