That is the cruel engine of Kindleberger's framework. The tulip was genuinely beautiful. The railway genuinely collapsed the cost of moving goods. The internet genuinely rewired commerce. And in every single case, the financial response to the genuine thing destroyed people who had done nothing wrong except believe the genuine thing at the wrong price, at the wrong time, with the wrong information.

I am an insider. I need to say that plainly. I was in the room in Trivandrum when the twenty-fold multiplier materialized. I watched it happen. I measured it. I reported it in The Orange Pill with as much precision as I could manage. And the Kindleberger framework tells me exactly what happens next to that number: it leaves my room, enters the financial ecosystem, and becomes detached from every condition that made it true. But the locomotive's power was real. The internet was a real network that genuinely transformed the economics of communication, commerce, and media. The NASDAQ's rise from under a thousand to over five thousand in five years was not a rational response to the World Wide Web's utility. But the utility was real.

When physical capital is displaced, the loss is absorbed by the owners of that capital — typically corporations or investors who have diversified their holdings and can absorb the write-down. When human capital is displaced, the loss is absorbed by the individuals who possess that capital — the workers whose skills are being commoditized. These individuals have not diversified their holdings. A software engineer's human capital is concentrated in software engineering. But the AI displacement is broader than any of these. It does not affect a single industry or a single category of skill. It affects the entire category of knowledge work — the largest and fastest-growing segment of the modern economy. The breadth of the displacement means that the financial repricing will extend to communities, industries, and demographic groups that have never before been directly affected by a technological transition. This breadth is what makes the institutional response so urgent, and what makes the Kindleberger framework so relevant — because the framework insists that the institutional response to a displacement determines whether the displacement produces broadly distributed benefits or concentrated ruin.

Kindleberger distinguished, across his career, between displacements that were accompanied by adequate institutional responses and displacements that were not. The railway mania of the 1840s was eventually followed by the Joint Stock Companies Act of 1856, which established the framework of limited liability that governed corporate finance for a century and a half. In each case, the institutional response came after the damage — too late to prevent the mania, but timely enough to create the conditions for the recovery.

The question for AI is whether the institutional response will follow the same pattern — arriving after the crash, cleaning up the damage, and building the structures that should have been in place before the cycle began — or whether, for the first time in the history of financial manias, the institutions will be built in time to contain the damage before it becomes widespread. The speed of the AI displacement compresses the timeline for institutional response, and the breadth of the displacement expands the scope of the damage that institutional failure will produce. The Kindleberger framework does not predict the outcome. It predicts the consequences of the outcome, which are measured in the distribution of financial pain across the people and communities that are least equipped to absorb it.

Chapter 3: Credit Expansion and the Architecture of Euphoria

Following every displacement, credit expands. Simultaneously, corporate investment in AI infrastructure — specialized chips, data centers, energy supply, cooling systems, talent acquisition — has reached levels that constitute a second, parallel credit expansion, as established technology companies reallocate capital from existing operations toward AI development on the assumption that the displacement will reward early movers and punish the hesitant.

The circular financing structure that emerged by late 2025 would have particularly interested Kindleberger, who spent decades documenting the self-referential credit mechanisms that characterize the mature phase of a mania. The university student who shifts from a traditional computer science curriculum to a specialization in machine learning, the mid-career professional who enrolls in an AI bootcamp, the liberal arts graduate who teaches herself prompt engineering — each is allocating human capital toward the AI opportunity, a form of investment that will either pay returns or produce losses depending on whether the displacement unfolds as the narrative promises. The aggregate magnitude of this educational credit expansion is enormous.
