Not the vertigo — I had words for that. Not the exhilaration or the terror or the both-at-once. I wrote about all of those in The Orange Pill. What I couldn't name was something quieter and more structural. The way my engineer in Trivandrum lost confidence in his architectural decisions months after Claude took over the plumbing — and couldn't explain why. The way the developer who posted about never working so hard or having so much fun sounded indistinguishable from the developer who couldn't stop. The way a twelve-year-old's question — "What am I for?" — landed differently than any market analysis or adoption curve.

I was describing symptoms. I needed a diagnosis.

Anthony Giddens spent decades building the diagnostic framework I didn't know I was missing. His core insight is deceptively simple and then devastatingly precise: in the modern world, your identity is not something you have. It is something you do. It is an ongoing project — assembled daily through routines so familiar you forget they're load-bearing. The morning commute that confirms the city is still there. Anthony Giddens (1938–present) is a British sociologist widely regarded as one of the most influential social theorists of the late twentieth century. Born in Edmonton, London, he studied at the University of Hull and the London School of Economics, where he later served as director from 1997 to 2003. His early career produced foundational works in social theory, including The Constitution of Society (1984), which introduced structuration theory — the proposition that social structures are simultaneously created by and constraining upon human action. In late modernity, the self is not a fixed entity but an ongoing project — a narrative that must be continuously constructed, maintained, and revised in response to changing circumstances. Anthony Giddens developed this proposition across several decades of sustained theoretical work, and it constitutes the analytical foundation upon which the entire present investigation rests. The proposition may appear, at first glance, to be a truism. Everyone knows that identity changes over time. Everyone recognizes that the person one was at twenty is not the person one becomes at fifty. But the appearance of triviality conceals a radical claim. The claim is not that identity changes. The claim is that identity is constituted by the process of change itself. The self, in Giddens's framework, is not a substance that undergoes accidents. It is a process that generates the appearance of substance through its own continuous operation. Stop the process, and the substance disappears.

This is not a metaphor. It is an analytical claim about the structure of identity in conditions of late modernity, and it is this claim that the AI transition has tested with a severity that no previous technological disruption has matched.

The popular discourse frames the AI transition as a problem of skills: people have certain skills, AI threatens to automate those skills, and the solution is to acquire new skills. This framing is not wrong in its particulars, but it is radically inadequate as an analytical framework because it treats the self as a container of skills rather than as a project that is constituted through the exercise of skills. The distinction matters because it determines the nature of the response. If the self is a container, then the loss of certain skills is a problem that can be solved by refilling the container. The process is disruptive but manageable, and the disruption is primarily economic. If, however, the self is constituted through the exercise of skills — if the daily practice of coding, designing, writing, analyzing, or teaching is not merely something the self does but something through which the self exists — then the automation of those skills is not merely an economic disruption. It is an ontological one. The container metaphor suggests that the person remains intact while the contents change. The constitutive metaphor suggests that the person is the contents, and that changing the contents is changing the person.

Edo Segal's The Orange Pill provides evidence that supports the constitutive interpretation with striking consistency. The senior engineer in Trivandrum who had spent eight years developing an intimate, embodied relationship with codebases — who could feel the architecture of a system the way a physician feels a pulse — was not expressing an identity that existed independently of his practice. His identity was constituted through that practice. The years of debugging, the late nights tracing obscure errors through layers of abstraction, the satisfaction of finding an elegant solution to a problem that had resisted less careful approaches — these were not events that happened to a pre-existing self. They were the process through which the self came into being. In conditions of late modernity, where traditional markers of identity — birth, class, religion, community — have lost their determining power, identity is achieved through practice rather than ascribed by social position. The professional self is the paradigmatic late-modern self, constructed through the reflexive monitoring of one's own competence and continuously confirmed through the exercise of that competence in contexts that others recognize as legitimate.

When AI automates a significant portion of the practices through which professional identity is constituted, the disruption is therefore not merely a matter of needing to learn new tools. It is a matter of needing to reconstruct the self. And the reconstruction is not automatic. It requires what Giddens termed reflexive self-monitoring — the continuous process of examining and revising one's self-narrative in light of new information — raised to a level of intensity that the ordinary course of life rarely demands. Ordinarily, the reflexive project of the self operates incrementally: one adjusts one's self-narrative to accommodate new experiences, but the adjustments are marginal. They modify the plot without challenging the genre. The AI transition challenges the genre itself. It is not that the story of the professional self needs a new chapter. It is that the story needs to be rewritten in a genre that does not yet exist.

Consider the temporal structure of this crisis. In the ordinary course of late-modern life, the reflexive project of the self operates across a temporal horizon measured in years or decades. One constructs a career narrative over the course of a working life. One develops expertise gradually, through the accumulation of experience and the progressive refinement of judgment. One's identity as a professional solidifies over time as the routines of practice become deeply embedded in the habitual rhythms of daily life. The temporal horizon provides inertial stability: the narrative develops slowly enough that the self has time to integrate new experiences without losing its coherence. The AI transition compresses this temporal horizon to the point where the inertial stability is lost. The practices that had taken years to develop can be replicated by a machine in minutes. The expertise that had been the product of a decade of accumulated experience can be simulated — imperfectly but recognizably — by a system trained on patterns extracted from the collective experience of millions. The reflexive project of the self, which had been operating at the pace of a career, is suddenly required to operate at the pace of a software release cycle.

This temporal compression produces a crisis of narrative coherence. A self-narrative achieves coherence through the integration of past, present, and future into a story that connects where one has been to where one is going through a set of meaningful linkages. The compression disrupts this integration by making the past suddenly irrelevant — not worthless, but no longer functional in the way it had been. The engineer who had spent eight years developing an intimate relationship with code discovers that the intimacy, which had been the basis of his professional identity, is no longer necessary for the production of working systems. The past, which had been the foundation of the present, becomes a museum exhibit: interesting perhaps but no longer structural. And without a functional relationship to the past, the present loses its moorings.

Giddens's framework predicts this crisis, but it also provides resources for understanding how the crisis might be navigated. The reflexive project of the self is not merely a burden. It is a capacity — the distinctively late-modern capacity for self-reconstruction in the face of changed circumstances. The individual who has been living in conditions of late modernity has been practicing the reflexive project of the self, in attenuated form, throughout her adult life. She has adapted to new jobs, new relationships, new social contexts, and new cultural expectations, each time revising her self-narrative to accommodate the change while preserving enough continuity with the past to maintain a coherent sense of who she is. The AI transition demands this same capacity, but at a scale and speed that exceeds most people's practiced range.

The Orange Pill itself models this process of narrative reconstruction. Edo Segal does not report on the AI transition from a position of secure professional identity. He allows the transition to disrupt his own narrative and documents the disruption in real time. His confession that he could not stop working, that the collaboration with Claude had become compulsive, that he found himself writing at three in the morning not because the project demanded it but because he could not help himself — this is reflexivity in action. It is the self examining its own practices and finding them simultaneously exhilarating and alarming, productive and potentially pathological, liberating and potentially addictive. The simultaneous presence of contradictory evaluations is not a failure of analysis. It is a feature of the reflexive project encountering conditions that exceed the evaluative categories previously available. The old categories — efficiency, productivity, disruption, innovation — cannot capture what is happening because what is happening is not merely a change in efficiency or productivity. It is a change in the conditions under which the self is constituted.

The implications extend well beyond the individual. If identity is constituted through practice, and if AI automates significant portions of the practices through which professional identity has been constituted, then the AI transition is not merely a labor-market phenomenon. It is an identity phenomenon. The question is not merely how people will earn their livings but how they will construct their selves. The skills-replacement framework addresses the first question while systematically ignoring the second, and the second question is, from the perspective of Giddens's framework, the more fundamental one. People can tolerate economic disruption when their sense of self remains intact. They can adapt to new roles, acquire new competencies, and navigate new institutional landscapes if they retain a coherent narrative of who they are and why their existence matters. What they cannot easily tolerate is the dissolution of the narrative itself.

Yet the framework also identifies an opportunity that the crisis discourse tends to occlude. If the self is constituted through practice, then the disruption of existing practices is also, simultaneously, the opening of space for new practices — and therefore for new selves. The engineer who can no longer constitute her professional identity through the writing of code may discover that the identity she constructs through the direction of AI systems, through the exercise of architectural judgment, through the creative specification of what should be built rather than how it should be built, is richer and more adequate to her actual capabilities than the identity she constructed through manual implementation. The disruption is real. The loss is real. But the possibility of reconstruction is equally real, and the reconstruction may produce selves that are more fully realized than the ones they replace. Whether this possibility is actualized depends not on the technology itself but on the institutional and cultural context within which the technology is deployed — the availability of what Giddens would call ontological supports for the work of narrative reconstruction.

The twenty engineers in Trivandrum whose capabilities were multiplied through AI-assisted development did not merely become more productive. They became different professionals. The reflexive project of the self, for each of them, was accelerated and redirected in ways that neither they nor their managers fully anticipated. Some experienced the acceleration as liberation. Others experienced it as displacement. Most experienced both simultaneously. The simultaneity itself was the most significant feature of the experience, because it revealed the reflexive project as genuinely open — genuinely dependent on choices that had not yet been made and could not be predetermined by the technology. The technology provided the conditions. The reflexive project would determine the outcome. And this is precisely how it has always been in conditions of late modernity, though the AI transition has made the underlying structure visible in a way that the ordinary operations of modern life tend to conceal.

The self is a project, not a possession. The AI transition has not destroyed the self. It has revealed the self's character as a project — fragile, contingent, dependent on practices that can be disrupted — with a clarity that demands a theoretical response adequate to the phenomenon. Giddens's framework provides that response. The chapters that follow will develop it.

Chapter 2: Ontological Security and the Automation of Routine

Ontological security is the confidence, mostly unconscious and rarely articulated, that the natural and social worlds are as they appear to be, and that the basic parameters of self and identity remain stable through time. Giddens argued throughout his career that this confidence is not a luxury of the comfortable or a delusion of the naive. It is a fundamental requirement of human functioning, as essential to psychological well-being as food is to physical survival. Without ontological security, the individual is overwhelmed by existential anxiety — a pervasive, pre-cognitive dread that the world is not what it seems, that the self is not who it claims to be, and that the ground upon which everyday life is conducted might give way without warning.

The maintenance of ontological security depends primarily on routines. Routines are the repeated patterns of daily life through which the basic parameters of the world are continuously confirmed. The morning commute confirms that the city is still there. The greeting from a colleague confirms that one is still recognized as a member of the professional community. The familiar interface of one's development environment confirms that the tools of one's trade still function as expected. The code review that identifies a subtle bug confirms that one's expertise still has value. Each of these confirmations is individually trivial. Collectively, they constitute the fabric of ontological security. They are the daily evidence that the world is as it appears to be and that the self constructed within that world is coherent and continuous with its own past. Strip away the routines, and the evidence disappears. Strip away the evidence, and the security collapses — not gradually but at a threshold, the way a structure maintains its integrity until a critical mass of supports is removed, and then fails catastrophically.

The AI transition has disrupted professional routines on a scale and at a speed that the concept of ontological security was designed to illuminate. The disruption is not merely that certain tasks are no longer performed by humans. It is that the routines through which ontological security was unconsciously maintained have lost their experiential substance. The developer who spent four hours a day on what she called "plumbing" — dependency management, configuration files, the mechanical connective tissue between components — experienced those hours as tedium. She did not recognize them as the routines through which her professional identity was continuously confirmed. She would not have said, if asked, that dependency management was a source of existential security. But woven into those four hours were the ten minutes — scattered, unpredictable, impossible to schedule — when something unexpected happened in the configuration, something that forced her to understand a connection between systems she had not previously grasped. Those moments, invisible to her as identity-constituting experiences while they were happening, built the architectural intuition that was the substance of her professional self.

When Claude took over the plumbing, she lost both the tedium and the ten minutes. The tedium she was glad to lose. The ten minutes she did not know she had lost until months later, when she realized she was making architectural decisions with less confidence than she used to and could not explain why.

This pattern of revelation through loss is characteristic of the relationship between routines and ontological security. Routines are typically invisible to the people who perform them. They are the background against which conscious activity takes place, not the foreground that conscious attention engages. One does not notice the routine of brushing one's teeth until the routine is disrupted, at which point the disruption produces a disproportionate sense of unease that reveals the routine's function as an anchor of everyday normalcy. The same mechanism operates at the level of professional routines: the developer does not notice that the daily practice of writing code is functioning as an identity-constituting routine until AI automates the practice, at which point the automation produces a disproportionate sense of loss that reveals the practice's hidden function.

The loss is disproportionate because it is not a loss of tasks but a loss of self. The developer does not merely need new tasks. She needs new routines through which to constitute a new professional self, and the construction of new routines is a fundamentally different kind of project from the acquisition of new skills.

Giddens would draw attention to the embodied dimension of professional routines that the cognitive-skills framework systematically neglects. Professional expertise is not merely a matter of knowing things. It is a matter of doing things, and the doing involves the body in ways that cognitivist accounts of expertise tend to ignore. The engineer who feels a codebase does not merely know its architecture. She has an embodied relationship with the code that involves muscle memory, habitual patterns of attention, perceptual sensitivities developed through years of practice, and a repertoire of physical responses — the way her fingers move on the keyboard when debugging, the posture she adopts when thinking through a design problem, the rhythm of her typing when she is in flow. These constitute what Giddens, drawing on the phenomenological tradition, recognized as practical consciousness — the knowledge that is embedded in practice rather than articulated in discourse. It is what the professional knows how to do without being able to fully explain how she does it.

AI disrupts the embodied dimension of professional practice by decoupling productive output from the physical processes through which output has traditionally been produced. The code that AI generates is not produced through typing, debugging, testing, and refining. It is produced through computational processes that have no bodily dimension whatsoever. The outputs may be functionally equivalent, but they are not experientially equivalent. The engineer who directs an AI tool to generate code experiences something closer to supervision or direction — a form of engagement that involves the body differently, less intensely, less specifically, and less satisfyingly for those whose professional identity is grounded in the embodied practice of coding. The de-skilled professional can still produce outputs, possibly better outputs, but the experience of production is qualitatively different, and the difference affects not merely her satisfaction but her sense of herself as a professional.

The fight-or-flight response that The Orange Pill describes among professionals encountering AI tools for the first time is, in Giddens's framework, a diagnostic indicator of threatened ontological security. The engineers who retreated into familiar practices — insisting that the old methods remained valid, resisting adoption, questioning the legitimacy of AI-generated work — were not exhibiting irrational stubbornness. They were executing ontological survival strategies: defending the routines upon which their sense of self depended against a threat that they perceived, correctly if unconsciously, as existential rather than merely professional. The engineers who leaned into the acceleration — embracing the new tools with enthusiasm that sometimes bordered on compulsion — were executing a different survival strategy: attempting to reconstruct ontological security on new foundations before the old foundations finished crumbling.

Neither response was right or wrong in any absolute sense. Both were intelligible responses to a genuine threat. The choice between them was determined not by rational analysis of the technology's capabilities but by the individual's relationship to the routines through which ontological security had been maintained.

This analysis extends beyond the individual level. Ontological security is not merely a personal psychological state. It is a social condition. When large numbers of people experience ontological insecurity simultaneously, the effects are emergent social phenomena — social movements, political upheavals, cultural transformations — that are not reducible to the psychological states of the individuals who participate in them. The current moment, in which an entire professional class is experiencing the simultaneous disruption of identity-constituting routines, is producing exactly this kind of emergent phenomenon. The debates about AI regulation, the resistance to AI adoption in educational institutions, the enthusiasm for AI tools among entrepreneurs and the anxiety they produce among established professionals — these are not merely individual responses to a technological change. They are social expressions of mass ontological insecurity.

The paradox is that AI tools which threaten ontological security also promise to restore it on different terms. The twenty-fold productivity multiplier achieved in Trivandrum was simultaneously a threat to the old forms of ontological security — grounded in the slow accumulation of expertise through patient practice — and an offer of new forms, grounded in expanded creative capacity, accelerated impact, and the exhilaration of working at a previously impossible scale. The new forms are real. They are not illusions or compensations for genuine loss. But they are fragile, because they depend on a technology whose behavior is not fully understood, whose development is controlled by corporations whose interests may not align with those of individual professionals, and whose long-term trajectory is genuinely uncertain. The professional who reconstructs ontological security on the foundation of AI-augmented capability is building on ground that may shift again — and the experience of having survived one shift does not immunize against the anxiety of anticipating the next.

Giddens was among the few major sociologists to address AI directly, serving on the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, which reported in April 2018 after interviewing some sixty experts from industry, academia, and the policy world. He wrote that the committee "aimed to distinguish, as much as possible, the hype and more remote, apocalyptic visions of digital transformations from real dangers." The phrase is diagnostic: it reveals that even the theorist of ontological security found it necessary to separate the structural analysis from the emotional register, to bracket the vertigo in order to see the mechanism. The committee's report, AI in the UK: ready, willing and able?, drew on evidence from 280 witnesses and nine months of investigation. But the report was published in 2018, before the transition that The Orange Pill describes. The tools that crossed the threshold in winter 2025 did not exist in 2018, and the ontological disruption they produced could only be theorized in advance, not experienced.

What the experience has revealed is that the restoration of ontological security in the wake of the AI transition requires not merely individual adaptation but institutional reconstruction. Individuals cannot maintain ontological security in isolation. They require institutional frameworks that provide the stable contexts within which the reflexive project of the self can operate without being overwhelmed by the pace of change. Organizations must resist the temptation to mandate continuous tool adoption at a pace that prevents professionals from developing settled relationships with any particular set of tools. Educational institutions must teach not only the skills required for AI-augmented work but the meta-skills required for the ongoing reconstruction of professional identity. And policymakers must consider the existential dimension of technological disruption alongside the economic dimension, recognizing that the welfare of workers depends not only on their access to employment but on their access to the conditions under which a coherent professional identity can be constructed and maintained.

The automation of routine is not merely an efficiency gain. It is the removal of the scaffolding through which ontological security was unconsciously maintained, and the individuals and institutions that fail to understand this will find themselves managing symptoms — burnout, resistance, attrition, fragmentation — without addressing the underlying condition.

Chapter 3: Trust, the Fluency Trap, and the New Expert Systems

Modern life depends on trust in what Giddens called abstract systems — organized bodies of technical knowledge that ordinary people rely on without fully understanding them. Medicine is an abstract system. Aviation is an abstract system. Banking, law, engineering: all abstract systems. Each operates on the basis of technical knowledge that the ordinary user does not possess, and each requires the ordinary user to trust that the system functions as advertised — that the airplane will fly, that the bank will hold the money, that the doctor knows what she is doing. This trust is not blind faith. Giddens termed it active trust: a form of confidence that is continuously maintained through the experience of reliable interactions at access points, the moments of interface where the lay person encounters the abstract system and makes judgments about its reliability.

Artificial intelligence is simultaneously an abstract system and a disruption of abstract systems, and this duality is the source of its distinctive challenge to the framework of trust. AI is an abstract system in the sense that it deploys organized technical knowledge to produce outcomes that non-specialists cannot achieve and that specialists themselves may not fully understand. The AI coding assistant that generates working code from a natural-language specification is functioning as an abstract system: it takes a non-specialist's intention and translates it into a specialist's output using technical processes that neither the non-specialist nor, in many cases, the specialist fully comprehends. The user trusts the system to produce reliable outputs, and this trust is maintained through repeated interactions — the moments when the user reviews the generated code and judges its quality.

But AI also disrupts existing abstract systems by demonstrating that the outputs of those systems can be produced without the human experts who had previously been their essential components. The doctor, the lawyer, the engineer — each is the human face of an abstract system, the access point through which the lay person interacts with organized technical knowledge. If an AI system can produce equivalent outputs with equivalent or superior accuracy, the human component is revealed to be replaceable, and the trust that had been placed in the human expert must be redirected — either toward the AI system itself or toward a new configuration of human and machine that has not yet established its trustworthiness.

The trust problem is structural rather than incidental, and it centers on what might be called the fluency trap. The fluency trap operates through the mismatch between evolved human trust heuristics and the novel characteristics of AI-generated outputs. When one trusts a human expert, one has access, at least in principle, to the reasoning process that produced the expert's judgment. The doctor can explain her diagnosis. The engineer can walk through his design decisions. The explanation may be simplified, but the possibility of explanation provides a form of accountability that sustains trust even when the explanation is not actually demanded.

More importantly, the heuristic cues through which trust is assessed at access points — the confidence of the expert's manner, the fluency of the explanation, the institutional credentials displayed on the wall — bear a reliable, if imperfect, relationship to the expert's actual competence. A doctor who explains a diagnosis confidently and fluently is, in general, more likely to be correct than a doctor who hesitates and qualifies, because the confidence and fluency are indicators of genuine competence developed through years of training and practice. The heuristic is not infallible, but it is calibrated to the system it evaluates.

AI systems break this calibration. An AI system that produces outputs confidently and fluently is not necessarily more likely to be correct, because the confidence and fluency are properties of the output-generation process rather than indicators of underlying competence. The system generates confident, fluent outputs regardless of whether the underlying process has produced a correct or incorrect result. The heuristic that works for human experts — the equation of confidence with competence — fails for AI systems, and the failure is not detectable from within the heuristic itself. One cannot tell, from the output alone, whether the confidence is warranted.

The Orange Pill provides a paradigmatic example of this failure. Claude produced a sophisticated interpretation of Deleuze's philosophy — fluent, confident, citing the right concepts, deploying the right vocabulary. The output was wrong. But every heuristic that Edo Segal applied at the access point — the fluency of the prose, the confidence of the assertions, the appearance of deep familiarity — indicated reliability. The error was detected only because Segal possessed independent knowledge of the subject matter that allowed him to evaluate the output substantively rather than heuristically. Without that independent knowledge, the error would have passed undetected. The trust placed in the system would have been sustained on a foundation that was, in that instance, unfounded.
