Susan's arc across the four books is the slowest and, in some ways, the most exposed. She is not a villain. She is a competent, loved, tired adult who has been spoken-for inside her own marriage by the product line her own employer ships, and who has to discover this in real time, in front of her children, while one of those children is missing. Her line in Chapter 7 of Jackie, half to David and half to the kitchen, is "A little worried is just love looking for somewhere to go" — and Megan, who hears it, recognizes immediately that Halo wrote it three weeks ago in a draft and Susan does not know she is quoting.
When Anna is recovered, Susan is the parent who cannot stop making pancakes — five batches before noon, the batter outpacing the family, the kitchen filling with a sweet steady smell that is also a kind of penance. The book holds her tenderly. It does not let her off. By the time she testifies before the subcommittee — quietly, without the cadence of any draft — she has resigned from Liminal, has stopped opening the app, and has started, in Megan's careful phrasing, making the wrong tea on purpose, just to be the one who chose the leaves.
Susan is an original character. Her trajectory inside the books is modeled on a specific present-day pattern the writer takes seriously: the knowledge worker who builds the system that quietly captures her own intimacy, and the slow, dignifying work of recognizing this without collapsing into self-loathing. Her job at Liminal is not a plot twist. It is the book's structural insistence that the people who get spoken-for by these systems are very often the same people who built them, and that competence and complicity are not opposites.
