Working Through (Durcharbeitung)

Freud's term for the slow, repetitive, unglamorous clinical process of integrating newly conscious material into the ego's governance—the discipline the AI moment demands and the tool's efficiency discourages.
Working through is not insight. Insight is the flash of recognition—the moment the builder catches herself in compulsive engagement and sees the pattern. Working through is what comes after: the patient, iterative, often frustrating process of translating recognition into restructured behavior, of building psychic infrastructure capable of interrupting a compulsion whose source has been identified but whose force has not diminished. Freud observed that patients could recognize their patterns—see the repetition, articulate the underlying wish—and continue the pattern unchanged, because recognition alone does not generate the ego strength required to interrupt automatic behavior. Working through is the construction of that strength—layer by layer, repetition by repetition, through sustained engagement with the friction that insight alone cannot provide. In the AI age, working through means building practices of self-observation, external accountability, and deliberate friction-reintroduction that operate independently of the tool's seductive efficiency.
