Unconscious Inference

Helmholtz's 1860s doctrine that perception is not reception but silent reasoning—the brain infers the world most likely to have caused the signals arriving at the senses, and does so beneath awareness, faster than thought, in a process structurally identical to hypothesis and evidence.
When Hermann von Helmholtz proposed that the act of seeing is an act of reasoning, he made one of the most consequential claims in the history of mind science. The retina receives a flat, inverted, ambiguous pattern of light; from this impoverished signal the brain constructs a stable three-dimensional world of solid objects at definite distances. The gap is enormous. Helmholtz's answer was that the brain closes it by inference—by silently asking what external scene would most probably have produced this particular retinal pattern, and constructing the percept accordingly. He called the process unconscious inference because the reasoning is structurally like conscious argument—premise, evidence, conclusion—but it runs beneath awareness and cannot be overridden by it. You cannot by an act of will see the parallel rails of a railway track as parallel; the inference that they recede into depth wins.
