Not a metaphor but a reclassification — the planet understood as a finite vessel hurtling through space with a finite inventory, no resupply mission, and a crew that has never been given the operating manual.
Fuller insisted that Earth is a spaceship in the operational sense: a closed system with finite resources, no external resupply, and a life-support apparatus requiring comprehensive management. The reframing was not poetic but political — a refusal to discuss the planet in the vocabulary of nations and borders when the engineering reality was a single vessel with a single crew. The crew now numbers eight billion. The operating manual was never written, and Fuller argued this absence was not an oversight but a feature — the figures he called the Great Pirates preferred that passengers remain ignorant of the ship's actual parameters, because ignorant passengers compete for resources they believe to be scarce rather than organizing to demand comprehensive management. AI is the most powerful cognitive amplifier ever to board the ship, and the question it poses is whether it will be used to write the manual or to accelerate the processes that make the manual necessary.
