In contemporary culture, sincerity is the most sophisticated form of performance. Groys has made this argument across multiple works, and it is one of his most discomforting insights — discomforting because it dissolves the distinction between the genuine and the performed at exactly the point where the distinction seems most necessary. The person who confesses vulnerability in a public forum is performing vulnerability. The person who admits weakness in a professional context is performing the appearance of self-awareness.
