Jacobs's name for the intricate, unchoreographed order of a functioning street — the butcher, the schoolchildren, the bartender, the old women on stoops — whose cumulative presence produces safety and vitality no plan could replicate.

The sidewalk ballet is Jacobs's most quoted and most misread concept. She observed it from her second-floor window on Hudson Street: the hardware store owner setting out his display at eight, children walking to school at eight-thirty, the bar keeping the street populated until two in the morning. Each participant doing something different, for a different reason, at a different pace — and the cumulative effect a street that was never empty, never unwatched, never given over to any single use. The ballet was not leisure. It was the mechanism through which the neighborhood sustained itself. Casual exchanges circulated local knowledge, maintained social norms, built trust incrementally, and created the conditions in which cooperation was natural rather than mandated.
