Shift in Consciousness
The third dimension of
Macy's Great Turning — the
paradigm shift from industrial-growth to life-sustaining civilization — the most powerful leverage point available and the one the AI moment most directly tests.
The shift in
consciousness is the third dimension of
the Great Turning and, in Macy's framework, the most fundamental. Without it, the other two dimensions —
holding actions and new structures — operate within the paradigm they are trying to transform. Holding actions conducted from within the industrial-growth paradigm become negotiated accommodations with a system that remains fundamentally extractive. New structures built from within the competitive-intelligence paradigm replicate the possessive logic they are trying to replace. Only the shift in consciousness — from possession to participation, from extraction to stewardship, from the skin-encapsulated ego to the greened self that recognizes its
embeddedness in the web of mutual causation — changes the paradigm from which the other two dimensions operate.

The concept draws on Donella Meadows's hierarchy of leverage points in complex systems, which identifies paradigm change as the most powerful (and most difficult) intervention. Meadows ranked interventions from weakest (adjusting parameters) to most
