Organic Model of Collaboration
Whitehead’s philosophy of organism applied to human-AI partnership: the claim that a genuine collaboration is not the sum of its parts but a novel unity that constitutes the participants differently through the interaction—and that the quality of the whole determines the quality of what each part can become within it.
Whitehead called his metaphysical system the
philosophy of organism because he believed the organism—a whole whose parts are constituted by their participation in it rather than retaining their character independently of it—provides a more adequate model of reality than the mechanism, whose parts are assembled from pre-existing units that remain unchanged by their arrangement. Applied to human-AI collaboration, this distinction generates a third framework beyond the two that dominate existing accounts: the tool model (the machine is an instrument the human operates) and the communication model (two minds exchange information).
