Mustafa Suleyman is the rarest kind of thinker: an architect of the wave he is warning us about. He co-founded DeepMind in 2010, helped build the most consequential AI research lab of his generation, and then wrote The Coming Wave (2023, with Michael Bhaskar)—a book that treats the arrival of AI and synthetic biology not as a prediction to be debated but as a settled fact whose consequences demand urgent examination. His framing device is the historical pattern: every major general-purpose technology in history has proven uncontainable, and this one combines four properties that make its proliferation uniquely dangerous: asymmetry (a small actor can wield power once reserved for states), hyper-evolution (improvement faster than any institution can adapt), omni-use (the same capability serves creation and destruction with equal ease), and growing autonomy (systems that require less and less human direction).
