The merger is Kurzweil's name for the progressive integration of biological human intelligence with non-biological computational intelligence into a combined system that exhibits capabilities neither component possesses independently. It is not replacement—machines displacing humans—or subordination—humans controlling machines as passive tools. It is synthesis: a new form of intelligence constituted by the interaction between substrates, analogous to how the eukaryotic cell emerged from the merger of simpler prokaryotic organisms.
