Marshall McLuhan

The Canadian media theorist who announced in 1964 that the medium is the message—that the form of a communication technology reshapes consciousness more profoundly than anything it carries—and who thereby supplied the AI age with its most precise diagnostic instrument for what is being done to us beneath the level of our awareness.
Marshall McLuhan is the prophet of medial blindness. His central axiom—the medium is the message—is not a claim about television or radio or the printing press. It is a claim about the structure of human perception: that every technology we create extends a human capacity, simultaneously amputating another, and that the extension produces a numbness—a narcosis—that prevents us from perceiving what the technology is doing to us. We attend to the content of new media—what AI produces, whether the code is good, whether the prose is authentic—while the medium of AI quietly restructures the creative process from sequential to simultaneous, from specialist to generalist, from rough and incomplete to smooth and apparently finished. The debate about AI’s content, McLuhan’s framework insists, is the sleight of hand that prevents us from noticing the transformation happening beneath our feet. [YOU] on
