Linguistic Intelligence

The capacity for words and language — productive clarity, receptive depth, and metaphorical power — whose productive dimension is the most powerfully amplified human capacity of the AI age.
Linguistic intelligence, in Gardner's framework, is the capacity to use words effectively — in speech, in writing, and in the comprehension of language produced by others. It includes sensitivity to the sounds, meanings, and structures of language, and to the pragmatic uses of language to inform, persuade, and delight. The poet exemplifies its highest development, but the capacity operates across every domain where language organizes thought. In the AI age, linguistic intelligence occupies a paradoxical position: it is the capacity LLMs most powerfully amplify in its productive dimension (clear specification, precise articulation), yet the receptive and metaphorical dimensions — close reading, ambiguity tolerance, the capacity to produce productive disruption rather than coherent completion — are the dimensions the amplifier systematically bypasses.
