CONCEPT
The Labor Metaphysic
Mills's name for the cultural belief that work is the fundamental source of human dignity, social worth, and moral standing — the cosmology of productive effort whose collapse the AI transition has made unavoidable.
The labor metaphysic is metaphysical in the precise sense that it goes beyond any empirical claim about the economic necessity of labor and asserts a transcendent connection
between working and being fully human. The person who works is a contributor, a participant, a member; the person who does not work is morally suspect. The metaphysic survived every previous technological transition intact — industrial revolution, agricultural mechanization, office automation — because each transition destroyed specific skills while creating new work categories. The AI transition threatens the metaphysic in a way no previous transition has, because the tool's capabilities extend across virtually every domain of human intellectual activity, raising a question the metaphysic has never confronted: what happens to the dignity of work when the work can be done by a machine that does not work in any sense the metaphysic recognizes?
