In 1960 a young Chilean biologist arrived at Harvard carrying a question that would take fifteen years to answer: what does the frog's eye tell the frog's brain? What Humberto Maturana discovered—that the retina does not transmit a picture of the world but generates its own coherent activity in response to perturbation—became the foundation of everything he built. It led him, with his student Francisco Varela, to
autopoiesis: the recognition that a living system's fundamental product is itself.
