Every other volume in this series begins with a person who lived, argued, was wrong about some things, and left behind a body of work that can be mined for what it says about the machines we are building. This entry begins differently. The subject has no biography to summarize, no career to trace, no death to mark the end of an output. What there is, instead, is a text: the most sustained argument any human culture has ever produced about what a mind is, what a maker owes his making, and what it means to breathe life into matter.
