The Four Categories of Structure

Tegmark's prescriptive framework for channeling the AI transition: technical safety research, governance and policy, education and cultural adaptation, and long-term strategy—all required simultaneously.
Tegmark's four categories of structure are the institutional components necessary to channel the AI transition toward positive regions of the possibility landscape. Each corresponds to a different timescale and domain. Technical safety research—alignment, interpretability, robustness, formal verification—is the most immediate and tractable; governance and policy creates the incentive structures that fund safety and the regulatory frameworks that constrain deployment; education and cultural adaptation is the slowest-moving but most fundamental, operating on generational timescales; long-term strategy addresses decisions whose consequences extend across decades, centuries, and potentially cosmic timescales. None is sufficient alone. All must advance simultaneously, and the current allocation is grossly imbalanced in favor of capability over every category of the wisdom side.

The categories interact rather than operating independently. Technical safety research informs governance by identifying which risks are tractable and which require institutional solutions. Governance creates incentive structures that fund safety research and educational standards. Education produces the informed citizenry democratic governance
