Formulation Risk

The hardening of survivor testimony into closed framework — relief of explanation purchased at the cost of honesty and openness.
Formulation risk is Robert Jay Lifton's term for the danger that a survivor's mission—the testimony about an extreme passage—crystallizes into a finished explanation that forecloses continuing uncertainty. The survivor has experienced something overwhelming and has developed an account that makes the experience comprehensible. The account provides psychological relief: the unbearable uncertainty of 'I don't fully understand what I survived' is replaced by the satisfaction of 'I understand what happened and here is what it means.' But the relief comes at a cost. The formulation, once established, filters all subsequent experience through its categories, admitting only what confirms and excluding what contradicts. The testimony loses its capacity to learn—it becomes ideology rather than witness. Lifton observed this in peace activists whose nuclear testimony hardened into dogma, in Vietnam veterans whose accounts of moral injury became unmodifiable scripts. The risk for AI builders is that frameworks (intelligence as river, AI as amplifier) provide such satisfying orientation that they stop encountering the disorienting reality the frameworks were built to organize.
