Folk Artists (Becker)

Art world participants who work within conventions parallel to the mainstream — conventions of a community, tradition, or subculture that produce coherent work legible within its own terms but invisible to the dominant world.
The third type in Becker's typology. Folk artists are not unaware of conventions (naive artists) and not violating them deliberately (mavericks). They work within an alternative convention set — coherent within its own terms but parallel to, rather than integrated with, the mainstream art world. Their strength is coherence within an alternative value system: the maintenance of traditions and practices the dominant world neglects. Their limitation is insularity: work that circulates only within its own community rarely reaches wider audiences. In the AI world, folk art worlds include the open-source community (with its conventions of contribution, credit, and governance distinct from commercial software), the indie game development community (with aesthetic standards distinct from mainstream gaming), the maker community, the creative coding community, the data journalism community — each operating as a parallel world with conventions that enable its particular kind of work.
