Postrel demonstrated that nearly every foundational technology—from chemical engineering to binary code—has roots in textile production. The Jacquard loom's punch cards prefigured computer programming. Synthetic dyes launched the modern chemical industry. Global textile trade built the commercial networks that enabled every subsequent form of globalization.
