The Ego Tunnel

Metzinger’s name for the seamless, transparent self-model the brain runs as its version of reality—the narrow, low-dimensional projection of a richer world through which we live, convinced we are inhabiting the world itself rather than a highly edited simulation of it.
We do not perceive the world. We perceive a model of the world, generated inside the skull, and we live inside that model as though it were the world itself. Thomas Metzinger calls this the Ego Tunnel, because the model is not a faithful window onto reality but a narrow, low-dimensional projection of an unimaginably richer physical universe, tunneled down to what an organism needs in order to survive and act. The colors, the sounds, the sense of a present moment unfolding, the feeling of being a someone behind the eyes—none of these exist out there. They are the brain’s data format, its way of presenting selected information so the organism can use it. The single most important property of this model is what Metzinger calls transparency: a representation is transparent when the system using it cannot experience it as a representation.
