The religion Lauren Oya Olamina builds from the ruins of near-future collapse in Octavia E. Butler’s Parable novels, founded on three words that double as a survival strategy and a theology: God is Change—the doctrine that change is the fundamental nature of reality, that it cannot be resisted but can be shaped, and that wisdom lies in active partnership with the force rather than passive subjection to it.

Parable of the Sower (1993) and
Parable of the Talents (1998)—a young woman named Lauren Oya Olamina grows up in a near-future America collapsing under climate catastrophe, economic ruin, and social disintegration, and builds from that collapse a new religion. The religion is called Earthseed, and its foundational text states its doctrine with a directness that tolerates no softening: All that you touch, you change; all that you change, changes you; the only lasting truth is Change; God is Change. The doctrine is not a comfort. It is a discipline. Earthseed’s God is not a person, does not love, does not intervene, and does not care; it is the simple, relentless fact of transformation, impersonal and ceaseless.
