The Double Exponential

Kurzweil’s refinement of the exponential growth model: not merely that capability doubles at a constant rate, but that the rate of doubling itself accelerates—because each generation of information technology creates more powerful tools for designing the next, compounding both the capability and the pace of compounding.
The double exponential is what separates the Law of Accelerating Returns from ordinary exponential growth. In a simple exponential, the rate of improvement is constant: the capability doubles every two years, and the interval between doublings stays fixed. The double exponential describes what actually happens in information technology: the rate of improvement itself improves, because each generation of tools makes the design and development of the next generation faster, cheaper, and more powerful. The doubling interval shrinks. What was once a two-year doubling becomes eighteen months, then twelve, then six. The absolute magnitude of each doubling grows not only because the baseline grows but because the interval shortens, compounding both effects simultaneously. The consequence is the knee of the exponential—the point at which steady, previously imperceptible doublings produce absolute changes so large that they overwhelm every framework calibrated for linear or even simple exponential change.
