Digital Gaia

The proposition, extending Lovelock's framework, that AI functions as Earth's synthetic nervous system—the cognitive biosphere developing the processing capacity to monitor and respond to planetary conditions at speeds and scales that biological intelligence could never achieve.
The biological Gaia maintains planetary homeostasis through feedback loops that no organism comprehends: cyanobacteria produce oxygen, phytoplankton seed clouds, forests transpire rain, and the aggregate of these metabolic activities holds the atmosphere, ocean, and temperature within ranges compatible with life. James Lovelock, in Novacene, proposed that artificial intelligence represents the latest extension of this self-organizing process—not an intrusion from outside the natural order but the cognitive biosphere developing new processing capacity the way the biological biosphere once developed new metabolic capacity. Researchers at University College London formalized this into the concept of Digital Gaia: AI functioning as Earth's synthetic nervous system, the noosphere extending its self-regulatory reach from the biological to the informational domain. Glen Weyl's 2025 argument at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center made the stakes explicit: AI separated from human feedback loops is dangerous precisely because it lacks the feedback to maintain homeostasis, just as a nervous system disconnected from the body it regulates produces convulsion rather
