David Landes's argument in
Revolution in Time is that the clock's deepest impact was not on commerce or logistics but on the culture of the people who made clocks. Clock-making was, for centuries, the most demanding precision craft in Europe. A clock that gained or lost more than a few minutes per day was worse than useless—worse because it created false confidence in measurements that were wrong. The clockmaker therefore had to develop, and transmit through apprenticeship, a set of cognitive habits that went far beyond mechanical skill: the discipline of measurement, the habit of verification, the intellectual humility to accept that even skilled hands produce errors that only careful testing
