Taylor's term for the dominant moral framework of modern Western life — the culturally pervasive conviction that each person possesses an original way of being human and that the highest calling is to discover and express this nature faithfully.
The culture of authenticity is Taylor's name for the moral framework so deeply internalized in modern Western culture that most people experience it not as a commitment at all but as a self-evident truth about human life. Its central tenets are that each person has a unique inner nature, that self-expression is the highest moral achievement, and that conformity or suppression of the authentic self is the modern sin. The framework has roots in Rousseau, Herder, and the Romantics but became, over the twentieth century, the background moral framework of everything from psychotherapy to career counseling to the way parents speak to their children about meaningful life.
