The question the Master asked has arrived again, in different vocabulary, in every room where a twelve-year-old asks what she is for in a world where machines can do what she does. Confucius asked the same question from the opposite direction: not what the tool can produce, but whether the person wielding it has cultivated the character that deserves to wield it. His answer was
