Condemned to Be Free
Sartre's most misunderstood formulation — freedom is not a prize but a condition, inescapable and unchosen, because every attempt to escape freedom is itself a free act that confirms it.
The word condemned does the work most readers miss. Freedom in Sartre's formulation is not the reward of political struggle or the fruit of a well-lived life. It is a condition — inescapable, unchosen, absolute. The human being did not ask to be free; she was thrown into freedom the way she was thrown into existence. The condemnation consists in the impossibility of escape: every attempt to flee freedom is itself an exercise of freedom, and therefore a confirmation of the condition one is trying to evade. The developer who refuses AI has chosen refusal. The developer who adopts AI has chosen adoption. Neither can appeal to necessity because necessity is a pattern of other people's choices, and choosing to follow a pattern is still choosing. The weight of freedom is crushing precisely because it cannot be set down.
