Cognitive Niche Construction
The process by which AI—like every transformative technology before it—does not merely enter an existing cognitive environment but actively reshapes the conditions under which human intelligence develops, weakens, or flourishes.
Cognitive niche construction is the application of ecological niche-construction theory to the realm of mind. In evolutionary biology,
niche construction names the process by which organisms do not merely adapt to pre-existing environments but modify the selective environments in which they and subsequent generations will live. The beaver builds the dam; the dam creates the pond; the pond alters the water table, soil chemistry, and species composition; the altered landscape then acts as a new selective pressure on every organism within it, including future beavers. Every technology is an act of niche construction, and every cognitive technology constructs a cognitive niche: writing built a niche that selected for analytical reasoning; printing built a niche that selected for critical reading across texts; the smartphone built a niche that selected for rapid context-switching at the expense of sustained attention.
AI is constructing a cognitive niche at a speed and scale that no previous technology has matched, altering the conditions of mental existence faster than any prior medium—not
